Peronist incompetence theory might be even more fitting. The problem with that theory is the country is not run any better when it's run by non-Peronists. I’m fully aware of that (although I think Alfonsin and Macri were somewhat better, but that’s probably an ideological question), it was mostly a joke and criticism of Peronism which I view as a cult of personality based around a highly incompetent man who Argentina still hasn’t recovered from and his wife…

I always thought it was Peronists vs Peronists who keep repeatedly insisting they're definitely not Peronists

President Alberto Fernandez has announced that he is not running for re-election. This looks like the ideal opening for someone with the right level of opportunism. Hello Sergio Massa?

How political is the Maradona family? Diego was quite vocal wasn’t he? Big Carlos Menem fan, which is something that a certain sort of fan of his (Maradona's, not Menem's) likes to whitewash (and is presumably why you won't find it mentioned on his laughably bad Wiki biography).

Tbf he doesn’t sound much worse than many a past Argentine President.

Are you referring to a certain subsequent president who first made his name as a die-hard Menem backer?

The Peronists will be selecting for the presidency on 13th August. Sergio Massa versus Juan Grabois.

The primaries (PASOs) were held toDay. First rumours, that Kirchnerist Massa & right-liberal ("libertarian") Milei are ahead. Both JxC-candidates together seemingly not far ahead of the those of the deeply unpopular Kirchnerist government. Lots of channels are live-streaming at YouTube:
- TeleVisión Pública - C5N - ElTrece - América TV - La Nacion - Todo Noticias

Results of few thousand votes leaked:
Milei and Kirchnerists at 1/3 resp., JxC at just 20% - n.b. both candidates together! If this came to truth, a runOff Milei-Massa seems inevitable and considering the unPopularity of the government... I had a scenario as in Chile, where the voters had punished the left government with a tsunami for the most radical alternative (TheRepublicans) in the election to the constitutionAssembly, in mind; but after the very poor results of Milei's (semi)allies in regional elections i expected him to fail finally due to missing structures.
I appreciate, that Milei is against abOrtion, but economically he seems to be far too "Austrian" for ending as more than a crazy maverick.

Still no official results out, but according to a source from the government it's Milei 30% and the 2 other blocs 25% each.
Mrs.Bullrich, who represents the more conservative wing of JxC, has claimed, that Mr.Larreta, who stands more for the liberal/centrist establishment of BuenosAires-City, has already congratulated her.

Now appeared suddenly the first numbers (over 60% counted):
33% Milei
28% JxC: -17% Bullrich -11% Larreta
25% UP (Kirchnerists): -21% Massa -05% Grabois
05% Schiaretti
02% FIT-U (far-left)
Catastrophically bad numbers for both established parties. Whoever will make it into the runOff against Milei it is hard to see, how he can be stopped.

Bullrich beating Larreta is big news. But they're adult enough to work together (and have said as much).

Milei achieved strong results not in the wealthy capital, but in the poor pampa (a la La Pampa). Conducting with such support a ManchesterLiberalism will/would be ... interesting.
