even though its hardly affluent or pleasant Ahem, not exactly an accurate description. It's a very compact, economically diverse seat where affluence and deprivation sit on top of each other. If you want a more accurate picture of the parliamentary seat please take a look at my ward descriptions in the Portsmouth 2012 section on here/CatholicLefts on his website. Probably the closest camparison seat in your neck of the woods is Liverpool Wavertree. Incidentally, bearing in mind how much ramping UKIP have been doing about this seat (and Farage in particular) I've heard from a local Kipper member that they won't be standing a full slate in the local elections next year in Portsmouth South, going against what Hampshire UKIP have been indicating. This is rather odd and would appear indicate that for all Farage's hot air, should there be a by-election they won't be taking it seriously after all.

Portsmouth South As-yet unconfirmed by any of the major news organisations, but apparently Mike Hancock has resigned his seat. It's not quite this but....

Michael Crick on Twitter: ""It's news to me," says Mike Hancock in response to stories he's about to lose Lib Dem whip after Carmichael inquiry into sex allegations"."I asked Mike Hancock if he'd stand down as an MP if Lib Dems withdraw the whip. "Am I the type?" he replied, before confirming he wouldn't"."Lib Dems to issue statement on Mike Hancock within next few minutes".twitter.com/MichaelLCrick

I think the Tories have the most to fear from a Portsmouth South by-election. Instead of challenging strongly for the seat as they should be they could be in danger of behind pushed into fourth place behind UKIP and Labour.

totally agree, I think LD's would hold it like in Eastleigh if they pick the right local candidate and there must be a fair few. However no sign at all of Hancock going.
Oh I think this is the type of seat we should do well in as well so not exactly trouble free for us.

A statement after a while
BBC News (UK) @bbcnews Portsmouth MP Mike Hancock to face "disciplinary procedures" under orders of Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg - via @bbcpeterh
So what new news has triggered this ?
Also standard if someone under investigation the whip gets withdrawn, wont stop some of the press having a right go ....

think we may be looking at a Newark one very soon if Mercer has been caught out with cash for Questions, he has no choice.
And what an interesting one it could be and UKIP looking to win it, but a lot of labour votes as well ?
What were the council election results there, I am guessing Labour did well as Nottinghamshire was a poor performing council for UKIP ?

But Newark on its current boundaries is very safe; the pre-1983 seat included the Dukeries, the 1983-2010 seat included Retford.

Mostly OK, Gedling very good but Ashfield was distinctly underwhelming and almost cost us a majority.

Underwhelming in a seriously weird way: excellent results in some divisions, awful ones in others.

I take it you are referring to the most recent Labour MP?? Yes, a genuine scandal - but not because of anything she did RIP Fiona.

indeed a very sad story which the press missed.
This is looking more and more like a by election now, can not see how it will not be one.

MPs have a nasty habit of clinging on, though. If the HoC censures him in the way it did Macshane, that might force him out?
