As to the principle, she is clearly not going until someone (the First Minister) or something (the House of Commons) pushes her. The FM has no power to remove her as an MP. The House of Commons has the power to suspend her for a time which could trigger a "recall" vote. The FM could strongly recommend that the SNP NEC expels her, perhaps?

I suspect given the statements already made by Sturgeon, Blackford and a few SNP backbenchers that’s a given anyway. I don’t pretend to know the internal mechanisms of the SNP but I would imagine they have the power somehow to prevent her from being a candidate for them in the future.

Oh yeah, just a formal expulsion might prompt someone local to start a recall petition to unseat her, now she has absolutely no access to party resources to help her see it off.

The internal mechanisms of the SNP are as follows: 'there are rules that are followed at all times and which apply equally to all members (unless you're Joanna Cherry when we'll invent some new rules because we don't like you).'

I’m not sure they could do that unless the Standards Committee in the Commons decide to recommend a punishment that meets the standard set in statute for a recall petition.

Can't be done. 100% of the electorate could sign a petition and she could stay put.

Yes, unless it is an official recall petition it has no actual power to achieve anything.

I wonder what impact this will make on the Scottish Parliament, as the SNP can now be slapped with a PEB from any of the opposition parties with footage of the First Minister laying down the rules about Covid-19 then video of this MP, then the First Minister talking about child protection issues and then video of the former Finance Minister with the tagline "The SNP don't care about morals, they just want independence. Vote (party) for Scotland's issues!"

Half of Scottish voters would still vote SNP if they drank baby blood.

Half of Scottish voters would still vote SNP if they drank baby blood. And the other half wouldn't vote SNP even if making drinking baby blood illegal were the only policy! The evidence though is that once you've expelled the misbehaving MP there is pretty much no voter concern amongst "normals" even in the individual constituency never mind on the wider outlook. Voters seem to have a pretty low expectation of politicians that some of them will be corrupt / stupid / criminal and so long as a party jettisons the misbehaving MP there isn't any huge electoral penalty. Sheffield Hallam, Dover, Eastleigh, Glasgow East, all show the same pattern, there may be a slight dip but unless a seat is ultra marginal its not going to lead to the loss of a single seat

There is a possibility that they could lose that. Though, even if that were to happen, I agree that the long term consequences are minimal. Frankly, if they can get away with the Finance Minister and the man they were pushing to be the next FM being exposed for grooming a teenager, they can get away with pretty much anything.

I see Gorgeous George fancies giving it a go. Do you think Douglas Ross will agree to the Conservatives standing aside to give him a free run at the SNP? www.scotsman.com/news/politics/george-galloway-ready-contest-margaret-ferriers-seat-if-election-called-2994286

For a candidate like Galloway it's just magnified.

Somehow, I doubt that Labour will. Gerard Killen would doubtless stand and is more likely to attract the ant-SNP vote.
