If they had operational control, and started firing chief constables, then people might be more invested.

From BBC Look North reporter @corinnewheatley:
North Yorks PFCC election count going to second preferences as no candidate has won 50% of the vote. In first preferences, the Conservative candidate Zoe Metcalfe had the most votes with 34,385. Labour candidate Emma Scott-Spivey second with 18,094. @bbclooknorth

That’s a damn good showing for the Women’s Equality Party. It is. Bizarrely good, could it be one of their highest shares in any election ever?

Con 34385 Lab 18094 Ind Tordoff 14988 Lib Dem 9499 WEP 8837 Looks like 1,170 "spoilt" papers want of an official mark : 4 voting for more than one candidate as to the first preference vote : 733 writing or mark by which voter could be identified : 56 unmarked as to the first preference vote : 153 void for uncertainty :219

That’s a damn good showing for the Women’s Equality Party. It is. Bizarrely good, could it be one of their highest shares in any election ever? They got 25% in Culverden on Tunbridge Wells Borough Council in 2019. Pretty sure it's their best result in a non-council election, though. Given the low turnout and circumstances, plus the non-FPTP system, I don't think it's too surprising.

Usually the official mark is pre-printed on the ballot paper.

Usually the official mark is pre-printed on the ballot paper. These days it means someone has torn the ballot paper, and the official mark has become detached.

If my maths is right there is a Tory lead of 16,291 and 33,324 ballot papers to count?
Not everyone obviously will have used a second preference but of the Indy, LibDem and WEP voters you would imagine these would be more likely to be Labour leaning than Conservative....

It'll end up within single digits but we won't win
