The top Green candidate from earlier this year was also the candidate from the simultaneous mayoral election. owainsutton had said in the Green room that's she's moved away now, i think. Correct.

The Labour vote in 2018 was certainly very strong, will be interesting to see if they can repeat it.

I'm amazed that there is any profit in opening a market on a local government by election. Who outside of this forum would bet on that? Maybe the candidates and the mates I guess.

Longlevens is an area that really ought to be better for Labour that it's, but I suppose that's currently true of most of Gloucester Having canvassed in Longlevens, I wouldn't see it as a strong area for Labour at any time. Virtually no Asian vote, unlike other parts of the city, and generally suburban with lots of home owners. Oxstalls campus of Uni of Glos is not far, so there may be some student vote, I suppose, though that's not usually much help in local by-elections. FWIW on the part I canvassed this is a nailed on Lib Dem win, but of course I was only seeing a section.

I canvassed in Longlevens many years ago. A lady answered the door. Having the electoral roll showing two people of the same surname I said 'Mrs xxxx'. To which she said (with force) 'No. I live with Mr xxxx. I've replaced her!'

To which she said (with force) 'No. I live with Mr xxxx. I've replaced her!' A bit off topic but one of my favourite tales as a presiding officer is not dissimilar. Man and Woman come in to vote. Give me their names. I check the register, woman is on the electoral register, man is not. Me: I’m sorry, but you don’t appear to be on the electoral register sir Man: but I’ve lived here all my life Me: well I’m sorry but you don’t appear to be on the register. Is there any reason that could be? Have you moved house? Man: No Me: ok, I’ll have to ring the office and check. I ring the office who tell me that they have a electoral canvass form signed and returned in the previous autumn by Woman, crossing the man off. I go back to couple Me: I’m awfully sorry, but they had a form back in October last year, signed by you, with you crossed off the register. Couple both look at each other Woman : that’s when you were living with that slag in Bridgwater. Man stomps out. Woman is issued with ballot paper and voted.

We certainly don't do it to make money. Just part of our overall aim to provide an interesting, comprehensive range of politics markets which might encourage people to use Smarkets as a useful information source rather than just a betting site.

I have a pretty good feeling about the Gloucester DC by-election being a Lib Dem gain, just from social media it looks like they've been doing lots of activity and its a ward that elected a Lib Dem (alongside two Conservatives) in May, so the swing needed to win is quite small.

So excluding him, they are showing 49 Labour and 2 Lab co op, 7 Con and 1 LD.

At full council meetings, directly elected Mayors have a vote so I count them in the composition of the council.

Whereas I don't count elected mayors as part of the totals for these threads, so there will be some differences with David's figures for some authorities.
