I was in the constituency yesterday and have never been to a by-election where there was less evidence of one taking place. Didn't see any posters or signs anywhere. I saw some when out today but the domestic political poster is almost extinct in urban areas.

I'm pleased to see that Mad Mike Young of the OMRLP is standing. I always like to see who they beat.

Disappointed to see the BBC politics page don't have their customary "the polls have closed" story. Is a Christmas party a year ago really more important than a by election today?

Some people will complain that they raid their dustbins and crap in their gardens but who cares?

When I lived in Denmark all parties had permission to post on every lampost, so every street was lined with dozens of them. I got my dad to drive me round counting them, on the theory that this would give a hint to who was going to win.
It didn't.

Ellie Reeves has conceded Labour haven't won. Could at least have strung it out a bit...

This is how it is in Kirklees (including the Batley and Spen by-election)

In S Africa, it's still standard practice for political parties to blanket all available street lights with on remotely busy roads with election posters. My very first election experience, aged 18, was with the Young Progs in Cape Town (Constantia constituency), shinning up and down street lamps to tie on posters for David Knight (then again after the election, to remove them). That was on top of actual canvassing. The YPs were given full responsibility for a specific PD. We were put into pairs, one M one F, and given a street and a list of names. Before knocking on doors, we sent them hand written letters, telling them of our intention to call on a specific day - and so we did. I also took instructions too literally for a leaflet drop. Told we were doing a "knock and drop" Dressed in a suit and tie, I did exactly that: knocked on the door, and explained to the occupant that I had an election leaflet for them. At one household, as the door was opened a German Shepherd leaped at me and took a nip at my shoulder. I was not seriously injured, except for shock - but it took a nasty (small) bit out my suit shoulder.

Interesting imprint - the "Campaign for Truth in Politics" based out of a PO Box in Pudsey. That address leads straight to these guys headed by ex-BNPer Mark Collett.

I’d love the Tories to lose purely because I think this government deserves punishment but it won’t happen here

For my bets to come in I need a Tory victory and Reform to poll ahead of the Greens and the Lib Dems....which given the chatter on her should be a done deal.

Any ideas what the turnout is? Of course it'll bypass the news outlets who'll be reporting the Tory majority has been slashed from 19K to whatever much smaller number. It'll be interesting to see how much of the fall is related to the turnout. At the GE the turnout was 70%, is it feasible it could fall to barely more than half of that today?

I can't see much of a turnout - it's bloody cold here with a bit of sleet, which is about 8 miles from Sidcup I must be a similar distance in another direction, it's been a day with sunshine and blue skies here. As you say cold though, but the sort of autumn day it's fantastic to be out so I was thinking the opposite, the weather wouldn't have had as much negative impact as you may expect for a low-key December by-election.

Lets hope so. I was largely guided on the Reform bet by the fact they seemed to work the whole seat and canvass it rather than the other minor parties which were largely 'focussed' on one ward or a freepost leaflet only
