Very sad indeed; James Brokenshire seemed a thoroughly decent person and my impression in both NI and Local Government was that he was one of the best Secretaries of State in recent memory.

As I mentioned on another thread, when he was at the Home Office I had some dealings with him in my professional capacity and he was a cut above any other minister I've met, Labour or Tory.

Yes, very sad. As SoS at MHCLG he overturned official advice and refused planning permission in relation to a poorly designed tall building in my area, for which my local community is eternally grateful.

Yes, he seemed genuinely interested in local government in a way that certainly doesn't apply to all Tories these days.

It's terribly sad news. A very good man who even if you had crossed swords with him was always kind and personable if you met him later. Not something you could say of many politicians who got that far. I take it that the lead is too much for Labour to overturn and a Liberal breakout would be the most plausible way for this to fall, buy this last had a Liberal second place in the 1980s. This blog puts the Referendum result as almost 2:1 to Leave, but that's not going to be enough on its own to stop a Liberal breakout democraticdashboard.com/constituency/old-bexley-and-sidcupIt's not as promising as Chesham, but the Liberals must be disappointed if they lose this by-election.

Very sad news. I was shocked to hear as he was back in the Commons several months ago after treatment and thought he was on the road to recovery.
Lib Dems are quite weak in this constituency so I'm not sure if any party can challenge the Tories here.

Such sad news, was well liked by most people in NI. So sad for his family.

Labour weren't that far away here in their Blair landslides and may at least fight some sort of campaign (in contrast to C&A)

Sad news. 53 is no age at all. I agree with all above that he came across as one of the decent chaps in parliament, but that's obviously secondary to three kids losing their dad so young. RIP.

It's not as promising as Chesham, but the Liberals [sic] must be disappointed if they lose this by-election. Astonishing spin. Disappointed not to get a 28+(?) point swing and take a seat from third place?

Disappointed not to get a 28+(?) point swing and take a seat from third place? No, it's a compliment. This is an incredibly skittish time and the Lib Dems have a by-election machine second to none. If I wanted to spin this I'd be talking about Labour's secure second place and saying this was a test for Keir as not only can't Labour win this (unlike the Liberals) but it would big up the lesser threat. In fact I'd be expecting exactly this line from Tory Central office if they have their wits about them more than they did in Amersham.

The Lib Dems have no chance of gaining this. They've never been the main challenger and they even lost their deposits in 2015 and 2017. My early take is it will be comfortable Tory hold.

RIP James Brokenshire. I think it will be a comfortable Tory hold. Outer London leave voting seat. I would love to see the Mayoral and GLA elections to compare. To the Lib Dem, this is no Chesham and Amersham, democrgrahics are not in your favour and your not in second place by a mile.
