"I agree shortening the 12 day rule to 8 days would be welcome. I have no idea why it was set at 12 days in the first place, well before my time. Robert might know?"Sorry, not at all. I think middleenglander might be the originator of that rule.

Congratulations to Right Leaning for the week and Toylyyev for an emphatic and well deserved overall victory this month. Ta and congratulations seconded to Right Leaning for winning the week and for coming within five votes of the correct winning combination in Retford. And also to greenhert anew for the best prediction of John Robertson's vote and winning the associated 'bragging rights', a feat which seems to have come back into fashion of late after a first appearance for a Shetlands vote earlier on. Incidentally i found out yesterday that johnloony had the best call in the unofficial predictions for the election in Orkney at the end of last year and that it had been erroneously called for someone else, and hence my congratulations extended there too.

I think middleenglander might be the originator of that rule. You are quite right. The logic was that "unexpected" by-elections were normally identified on a Friday, frequently through David Boothroyd's blog. If such a by-election were to occur on the following Thursday this would disadvantage those who were away (frequently on holiday) and who had posted early. The rule was to ensure there was always at least a full week between a by-election being identified and inclusion in the prediction competition. On the basis that most such by-elections were identified on a Friday, then there would be little practical difference between 12 days or 8 days. Moreover, in the case of the Dover by-election David Boothroyd identified this on 2nd July with the by-election being held on 22nd July. It could and should have been included in the prediction competition under the long established rule.

It was only picked up on the by-elections 22nd July thread on 11th July by kevin so the change would have made a difference. This is what robbienicoll made his decision on and hence why it was excluded, correct with the 12 day rule. Maybe Davıd Boothroyd identified it elsewhere but the rest of us didn't pick up on that.
I'm happy for this to be shortened.
