Point seven: we are not THE DISABLED; we are people with disabilities! The disabled is as insulting as “the blacks” or “the Asians” 🤬 What the flying fuck is the difference between those two statements? Carlton if you’re seriously ignorant enough to need it explaining to you, and can’t ask without resorting to profanities, I have neither the patience or inclination to be the one to do so. As far as I’m concerned somewhere there’s a rock from which you crawled and should return at the earliest opportunity.

But the message is a potent one, vote for me and your vote will count Always a hard one for a third party in a by-election But you are all talking about the product and about him! Who is ever talking about the other candidates?

Well as you ask, I would say that the word 'disabled' implied that the person can do next to nothing for themselves, whereas people 'with disabilities' indicates that there are certain (often quite major) things that they can't do.

It seems to me there is a difference between how one talks an Individual person and a group of people here. I often say my sister is disabled rather than is a person with disabilities. It's habit more than anything. She doesn't currently object to this, if she did I guess I'd change it. As for wider groups I don't tend to find myself using the term the disabled or people with disabilities, probably because my discussions tend to be disability specific to MS, alzheimers, stroke etc.

We had a question in the pub quiz on monday about the number of fallen angels. Apparently some guy worked out that the total number is 103.

As for wider groups I don't tend to find myself using the term the disabled or people with disabilities, probably because my discussions tend to be disability specific to MS, alzheimers, stroke etc. Precisely; the operative word is “The”, which in the context of Galloway’s leaflet implies that people with disabilities and elderly people are a homogeneous group without any individuality, either in personality, interests or needs, etc., whereas, as the most obvious example here, your sister and I are, I’m sure extremely different people, and have different needs, from our care packages to the equipment we need to allow us to maintain some independence. Often well intentioned service provision and legislation has failed disabled people because it hasnt treated them as individuals (again, as an example, I’m profoundly deaf but can’t sign, so the provision of a signer is worthless to me, but a loop system used to be a huge help in allowing me to participate in public fora). As I pointed out in my original comment it would be grossly offensive to most right thinking people, and inaccurate, to refer to members of the BAME community as “the Blacks” or “the Asians”, just as we’d likely be falling foul of agreed definitions of antisemitism by referring to “the Jews”. The thinking, which I largely subscribe to, is that people with disabilities deserve the same courtesy of being treated as individuals and not just lumped together.

I am completely ignorant of why tossers agonise over the form and order of the very same words. But I think I might be able to work it out.

Yep. That's why I said what I said. Nobody cares and it won't do them an inkling of good. As nobody else has, I’ll ask - faeces? And if "nobody cares" then it won't rebound on Labour, surely? As it was, expecting the fifth anniversary of Cox's killing not to be marked in some way - not least given that many local Labour people would have been colleagues if not friends of hers - was never realistic, and doing so in an appropriate and tasteful fashion is not "milking it".

The Conservatives are also suspending campaigning according to BBC News website, whilst The Yorkshire Party were still deciding, the LDs hadn’t responded to enquiries, and Galloway was merely pausing his campaign for a moment’s silence.
