Famously Keith Vaz's first name is Nigel! Of course Vaz isn’t the only famous Nigel with Leicester connections. Adrian Mole was originally Nigel Mole when he first appeared on a BBC Radio Series. He subsequently was renamed Adrian because of the similarities to Nigel Molesworth. |

George Galloway has filed a court petition to set the by-election result aside after Guido Fawkes reported that the Labour Party used four of its MP's offices to phone bank during the campaign. Galloway argues that this was national expenditure that wasn't declared and that, in effect, the taxpayer subsidised the Labour campaign.

He is long past the deadline for submitting a petition, which is 21 days after the election - 22 July. Some latitude is allowed if it relates to the Return of Election Expenses but they were all submitted by the first week in August. The courts have generally been very strict about deadlines for lodging election petitions and I expect this one will face an immediate attempt to strike out as being too late.

I'd add, that it would be rather hilarious if Labour, as the ones who started this focus on MPs' use of their offices to get Cox, also inadvertently put four of their own in the firing line. Maybe the parties should learn the obvious, you don't go digging after dodgy expenses on a partisan basis because it makes everybody look bad? |

Without going off topic, but I had made a list of possible constituencies on a different thread, Baroness Keeley of Worsley and Baroness Fovargue (who?) of Makerfield being the next most likely (in terms of age). Plus both border with Leigh so... I had to look up Yvonne Fovargue. I've lost track of some of the newer MPs, but she's been there since 2010 and it's not like she's got a forgettable name. Surely a candidate for Most Anonymous MP of the Decade. Someone mentioned Yvonne Fovargue to me earlier. It took me a couple of minutes before I remembered who she was. |
