Which featured a now infrequent (but always welcome) contribution from @strinity, who knows the area pretty well. It would certainly be interesting to know if Tory literature touched on communal stuff, and it might also be worth noting that turnout was very low. I noticed that too. I wonder whether it was down to a weak Labour campaign. Leicester East party appears to be in a mess and Vaz appears to be running it again. The Tories may well have mobilised enough from the white working class district. Leicester East Constituency Labour Party was a mess when I lived there 34 years back. Keith Vaz appeared to be parachuted into the Constituency by the party centrally. He came across as devoid of any political principles. By the time of the 1987 General Election, we were on our way to Edinburgh. I was glad to get out of the place.

Keith Vaz seems to have been selected centrally by an algorithm.
Leicester has a high proportion of the population of subcontinental origin. Vaz is of Goan origin. Tick.
The majority probably did not come direct from South Asia but via East Africa mostly from Uganda. Vaz comes via Aden. Tick.
The Leicester Asian population are mainly of Gujarati or Punjabi origin and include Hindus, Sikhs and Moslems. There was a divide between the former two groups with Indira Gandhi ordering Indian troops into the Golden Temple as part of the Khalistan bid for independence. Vaz is a Christian. Tick.
All the boxes ticked!

All the boxes ticked! Yes And he has also been somewhat'flexible', politically, whereas Diane Abbott and Bernie Grant were always clearly left wing and Paul Boateng tended more to the soft left

Didn't Boateng finish up as a Blairite Cabinet Minister?
If he hadn't taken the South African job it's not hard to imagine him spending a few months as the presumptive "Stop Brown" candidate.

Keith Vaz's political base was Richmond upon Thames, which isn't particularly solid ground to build a career as a Labour MP. Hence he was one of the perpetual candidates. He tried to get selected for Ealing Southall in 1985 (one of a succession of attempts to deselect Syd Bidwell), and also challenged in Brent East (but Ken Livingstone had that one stitched up). He was then beaten by Paul Boateng in the selection for Brent South in June 1985 (Boateng 31, Sharon Atkin 12, Keith Vaz 12). Then he tried to deselect Tom Cox in Tooting and narrowly failed (27-24).
After that came Leicester East where he was selected on 23 June 1985. There were seven on the shortlist including several Asian names.

Boateng was one of those people who has a credible, serious career outside parliament but who becomes progressively less talented once elected.

He had a pretty high profile as part of Leninspart's leadership team on the GLC, in particular as one of the Met Police's chief antagonists in the days when it was stíll run by the Home Office.

When Syd Bidwell was eventually deselected in 1991, Keith Vaz's sister Valerie (currently MP for Walsall South, of course) was one of the unsuccessful candidates for selection, incidentally. The same year Ms Vaz tried to get selected for Nottingham East but John Heppell comfortably defeated her in that selection contest.

Galloway's managed to get the ball rolling on the criminal damage complaint. The police are looking for that alleged Labour activist who admitted to destroying Galloway's campaign loudhailer on that video that was shared on this thread at the start of the month.

Has there been any sign of a petition by Galloway yet? (I'm one of the legions #BlockedByGalloway so can't check his Twitter.)

When I saw that footage a few weeks ago I naturally assumed that he would have been arrested in due course, within a day or two.

Fair to say that's not the most famous fact about Keith Vaz.

Yes, you do have to wonder what the Tories spent all that money on - especially given the (non) visibility of their candidate.
