I do like the idea of HS2 taking time to build up a head of steam.... Stop trying to derail the conversation. Is this virtue signalling?

Stop trying to derail the conversation. Is this virtue signalling? That's enough with the railway puns - we need to get this thread back on the right track.

Was there an obvious reason why Labour's vote was as low as 2,942 (5.6%) at the 2010 General Election? I appreciate Labour have never done well in this seat but that represented a decline from 6,610 (14%) in 2005 and the Labour vote went back up to 6,712 (12.7%) in 2015, 11,374 (20.6%) in 2017 and 7,166 (12.9%). Labour's 2010 result looks erroneous to me unless there were some candidate issues I have long forgotten. When did HS2 get into public consciousness? I vaguely recall it already being an issue when the coalition took over but I'm not sure whether it was a big issue in 2005. IIRC, it was being discussed when HS1 opened up (2003?) but there weren't concrete proposals, at least not publicly, until 2008 (maybe early 2009). The coalition opened it up to the usual spurious public consultation in 2010. 2009 sticks in my mind because a DWP colleague of mine got seconded to the DfT in Autumn 2009 to develop HS2 plans for public discussion and had the secondment extended on the day I left, 6th May 2010.

Back to Chesham, I agree HS2 will be a key issue and the worst thing the Tories can do for their own chances is select a plastic 'get Brexit done' candidate to fill the lobbies. Are there any former MPs that are being touted with a possible return? a la Hartlepool?
It probably won't happen, but I'd love to see a comeback for Rory Stewart, Justine Greening, maybe even Amber Rudd. Any of them would be a good fit for this sort of seat.

Dominic Grieve*? He was next-door of course. I don't know the remain figures for Beaconsfield but if Chilterns had the highest turnout and voted remain he could have done even better here? *Incredibly unlikely of course with Johnson at the helm.

Not bad for an old buffer. I wonder what the turnout will be? Might depend on whether the Tories or Labour put up a SPAD.

He stood /against/ the party. Less than 18 months ago.
I'm all in favour of second chances and welcoming back prodigal sons, but I'd probably draw the line there. Grieve is still on the naughty step with Big Sam and Soubry as far as I'm concerned.

I know that's not who you mean, but Sam Allardyce as (I guess) Tory candidate would be good entertainment value ...

Allerdyce was known to have voted Brexit so may be a Tory.

Allerdyce was known to have voted Brexit so may be a Tory. Actually, no - he's been a Labour voter but said he didn't want to vote for anyone after Brexit.
