With great sadness, there will be a byelection in the Chesham and Amersham constituency in room of the right hon. Cheryl Elise Kendall Gillan, deceased.

Sad news. Cheryl Gillan only got 55% of the vote here at the last election which is low for a very true blue area - even if it did vote 55/45 remain

I’m not sure why but I thought she was a lot older.
Must be one of the longest serving women Conservative MPs?

This is a shame. I always found her a nice person in my few interactions with her. Condolences to her family.

This will also be a more interesting by-election than the so-called experts in the media will give it credit for.

I’m sure I’ve seen her speaking virtually in parliament in the last month or so.

I’m not sure why but I thought she was a lot older. Must be one of the longest serving women Conservative MPs? The longest serving must now be the Deputy Speaker Eleanor Laing or May. Am sure David will instruct.

A shock... but the BBC says it was after ‘a long illness’.

Without wishing to speculate unduly I know she was ill during the 2019 General Election campaign so it was a long battle against cancer. Very sad. RIP to a fine Parliamentarian.

She is the first serving female Conservative MP to die since Judith Chaplin in 1993. Very sad. RIP.

Known for her very useful work on autism, amongst other things. Also became a bit known to the wider public as a returning officer in Tory MP leadership ballots in 2019.

A shock... but the BBC says it was after ‘a long illness’. One of the other MPs has tweeted to say that they gave each other support while having chemo together.

There was a 9.26% swing to the Liberal Demorats at the last election. I don't like them, but even I don't call them that.
