I do hope we see an Alba Party candidate for this one. Well, Chic Brodie is a former SNP MSP and founded his own party "Scotia Future" last year to run in these elections. Alex Salmond did say "vote for SNP and other Independence Parties in the constituencies".

I assume the narrative is that as the SNP win most of the constituency seats in most areas so they will not have much scope to take list seats. Many years ago Ian Davidson suggested the Labour should not contest the list seats in Scotland but leave that to the Co-operative Party. I doubt that the Co-op Party would have been considered as a separate party from Labour in this context. Why not? They're a separate party with their own constitution aren't they? That was the argument that Davidson put forward. It was designed to shaft the Lib Dems. I don't think that anyone agreed with him.

It's strange how by-elections keep occurring in the same places. E.g. Hartlepool and here. At the Coatbridge and Airdrie by-election in 1982 I met my wife for the first time. At Monklands East in 1994 I met erlend of this parish for the first time. Maybe I should pop along to this one - I might meet wife #2?

It would be. I often run into Erlend at by-elections.

It would be. I often run into Erlend at by-elections. Well you should be more bloody careful after it has happened so often.

In the long term, it is entirely to be expected - a bit like the birthday 23 people thing.

It's strange that it happened to someone from that person's point of view, but it isn't strange that it happened in general.

My birthday (26 August) was no. 1 on the list. I then asked people, in the order that they entered my office (obviously on other business!) what their birthday was. Got to, I think, the twenty-first person and --- bingo! --- a pair of matching birthdays. What made it weirder was that person's birthday was 26 August as well (different year, thank goodness, or I would have heard Twilight Zone music in the background).

Three people have opted for 'Conservative Gain'... For a laugh? I'd be delighted but I've gone for an SNP hold.

In my class at school there were 24 boys, with one coincident birthday. The weird thing in that example was that if you put everybody in alphabetical order (according to the register), the coincident birthday didn't appear until you add the 24th person.

Jim Dowson plans to stand as an Independent: Who he, I wondered? His tweets are quite revealing: the most recent few are: (1) conflating the liberation of the Falkland Islands from Argentinian occupation with the struggle against Marxist trade unions (2) religious fundamentalism (3) saying something nice about Nick Griffin (4) something about Serbian nationalism (5) something about Hungarian nationalism (6) something about Ulster Loyalist parades (7) homophobic dribble (8) throw your TV out of the window in order to defeat Covid (9) more religious bigotry

It's pretty much the entire point of what Christians of all kinds are celebrating around the world today. Obviously the rest of his recent twitter history is rather disturbing and revealing, but those ones simply demonstrate that the guy is at least nominally a Christian.
