Thank you for these Robert, very interesting.
One of the most interesting features of the Almanac for me was indeed the various tables and lists.
Harrow East really does stand out amongst these lists with it's electoral record.
In the lists of seats for highest proportion of Asian residents, lowest proportion of white residents, highest proportion born in Africa, highest proportion born in Romania.

That is not just interesting, it is useful, East African Hindus being a rather different community to (say) Nigerians or Ghanaians. (Urban legend has it that when the census first started to collect such information there was a blip of "Asian" population in Cheltenham caused by retired Indian Army officers and their spouses).

(Urban legend has it that when the census first started to collect such information there was a blip of "Asian" population in Cheltenham caused by retired Indian Army officers and their spouses). The census up to and including that of 1981 did not have an ethnic category per se but had a category for 'head of household born in New Commonwealth or Pakistan'. This would have resulted in the anomaly you describe but there were others if it was used as a proxy for 'non-White'. One of the highest figures in London in that category in 1981 was in Harringay ward (over 50% IIRC) and there were other very high figures in that area (partly to be expected because of course there is a very substantial non-White population in Tottenham). But there was a very big drop in 1991 in that ward and others when the question asked was more specifically about race (ie. 'in ethnic group other than white') because of course the 1981 census had captured the huge Cypriot population in that area.

The House of Commons Library data says East Renfrewshire is 2.6% Jewish. Thank you, Alan! You are quite right. I was being lazy and resorted to that source I linked. Unforgivable. In the Census tables I use, Altrincham etc is ranked at 20, but for this indicator they say figures are not strictly compatible so separated by sub UK unit. I shall take you advice, though. No offence intended.

Yes, the community is very much clustered in one part of town (which is the area where I grew up). Windy Nook and Whitehills, a ward towards the edge of the town, has no Jewish residents at all - very different to Coatsworth Road! Even within my part of town, I can think of cases where one street's residents are almost all Jewish, and the next street is the polar opposite. The impact on local elections is probably minimised because the community is split roughly evenly between Saltwell, Bridges, and Lobley Hill and Bensham wards. The first of those sees a relatively healthy local Conservative vote, but that could just be a coincidence (and healthy means 20% - that's still double the borough-wide figure).

Useless fact: I remember looking at the religion figures for Cannock Chase a few years ago (a seat near where I live) and noticed that there were 4 Jewish people recorded as living in the constituency. I don't know whether that was the lowest figure in the country.

I don't know whether that was the lowest figure in the country. That may have been the 2001 figures - there are now 9 Jewish people there. Cannock Chase has the lowest proportion of Jewish residents in the country, but there are several other constituencies with that number (or fewer): Cannock Chase 9 Nuneaton 9 Redcar 9 Hartlepool 9 Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney 8 Inverclyde 8 Blaenau Gwent 8 Airdrie and Shotts 8 Western Isles/Na h-Eileanan an Iar 3 Come to think of it, that's a fairly interesting set of constituencies. Generally urban but not really metropolitan in any way, and probably with some of the least transient populations in the country.

Or, as I saw some people post on Twitter at the time "The seats where turkeys voted for Christmas". Has it ever been completely established that education is a driver of election results (for instance "uneducated seats" will vote in an opposite manner to "educated" seats?) Given that 10 of those seats voted Conservative, 9 Labour and 1 SNP, who are the alleged turkeys according to this 'analysis'? (and given the seats listed range from the very safest Conservative (Castle Point, Clacton, Boston) to the very safest Labour (Rhondda, Knowsley, Walton, Hodge Hill) it is even more unclear what point is being made)
The point being made is ALL TORES ARE TEH STOOPID DUHHHH!111111
It just isn't being made very well.

Crosby's De Villiers estate was almost entirely sold off via RTB and the ward with a significant level of social housing (this one, including part of Seaforth with social housing - traditionally in the old Crosby seat which gave Shirley Williams her majority) is now in Bootle.

Ultra-orthodox to be accurate - it's a Hasidic community. The Chief Rabbi is Orthodox!
