I don't think the people want a new election. They'd just like the one they just had honestly declared, and the result honoured.

I love to give people like this the opportunity to live in Belarus for a year.

I love to give people like this the opportunity to live in Belarus for a year. It pissed me off on the night the protests kicked off when Americans on Twitter were like "Solidarity with Bealrus! We're going through the exact same thing here!". Arseholes.

So Lukashenko says he has to be killed to leave office. It feels like there's a sense of Romania 1989 in the air.
Now this is awkward! The assembled workers at a tractor factory calling for Lukashenko to leave. His face and body language is just incredible. According to what I have seen on Twitter, bosses were told to pick the most loyal and compliant to watch too.
What's most incredible is a state-owned channel decided to broadcast it.

The ticker tape says "Alexander Lukashenko answers questions at MZKT factory". I bet he does! They have a lot of 'Question Time/Any questions' etc in Belarus!

As mentioned by johng, here is old Nicolae in 1989. Something I'd never noticed is that the old bat Elena starts screaming "silence!" at the crowd as if they are naughty children. The fun starts around 2:33.

Vremya, Russia's flagship news programme, showed the crowd chanting for him to go. And showed him ranting at a punter. He's toast.

The fun starts around 2:33. There's not just ordinary booing or heckling. It sounds as if there was a kerfuffle of some sort going on down on the ground. It would be fascinating if we could go back in time and film it from all angles; perhaps there was some sort of fight or panic or confusion in the crowd which contributed to the developing situation. Perhaps the crowd were afraid they were going to be shot at, or confused that they weren't being shot at.

This really would be laughable if such atrocities weren't being carried out.
Here's an old electoral poster a friend of mine has shared on Facebook. 'The younger generation chooses Alexander Lukashenko' the headline state. It continues, 'The era of septuagenarian rulers is over. Belarus needs new people and a new politics'. He wasn't wrong.

Apart from the moustache he reminds me of the Gregor Fisher character in the Hamlet advert.

Perhaps the crowd were afraid they were going to be shot at, or confused that they weren't being shot at. I recall somebody (it may well have been you) bringing this up on here a few years ago. A bit later, I had a look on YouTube and found some other footage of that speech that wasn't filmed in the same way as the above that we have become familiar with. It clearly showed major restiveness in the crowds, banners being thrown down and trampled on, and so forth. Unfortunately the commentaries were in Romanian so I couldn't understand it

Edit: Although an afterthought had me check, I seemed to recall Poland kept using Cavalry a long time. I was right Wikipedia tell me the 1st Warsaw Cavalry Division was disbanded in 1947!
