To be honest I didn't know about the "Morningside Ladies" stereotype. I worked there last year and was just struck by how pretentious the place was- no obvious bakery but a Konditorei, a pub where the landlord banned denim, a sports shop that only sold hockey and lacrosse gear. My (Scotttish) colleagues and I went out and were surprised by the general hipster/smug environment, nice place it is though and with some decent pubs. But every time I hear that Scotland is a grittier, more proletarian place than England, I think of Morningside! The Konditorei is actually in Bruntsfield - MOrningside has a Greggs, a Goodfellow and Stephens and a private bakery (not to mention the Waitrose, M&S and Sainsburys ones). The sport shop probably does almost all its business to pupils at George Watsons and Uni Students. As to the pub, I take it that was the Canny Man which is, shall we say, its own place. It was indeed the Canny Man. Very weird. On my previous trip to Morningside, I had been unable to go and get lunch due to an inconvenient Papal visit!

The Canny Mans is not quite as idiosyncratic as it was in the past. They had a policy refusing to serve half of new customers purely on a random basis. If you went in with a shaven head it might up the odds a bit. Alternatively they might welcome you with open arms. The first time we went in, we greeted with strange looks but taken to a table and the 'reserved' sign was removed for us to sit down. The drinks were brought to the table along with a plate of sausage rolls. Many disgruntled would-be customers would write a stroppy letter to the Edinburgh Evening News. These would be cut out and pinned on the walls of the toilet. I suspect that the Sports Shop you are referring to is also in Bruntsfield, assuming it is the one I am thinking of. Morningside is very short of pubs. I can only think of the Canny Mans and the Merlin. There are a couple on the edge of Braids Hills. You seem to be writing about a different Morningside than the one I am familiar with.

It could well be that Morningside is a much smaller area than it is in my head then- I was certainly led to believe I was still in Morningside whilst some of this was going on!

Three weeks ago I walked up the Lothian Road as far as the Oxfam Record shop in Morningside visiting every charity shop on the way, missed a couple off the main drag right enough.

Some people like to extend the boundaries of Morningside when it suits them. It is all, however, in the Meadows & Morningside ward, which must be the most exclusively genteel ward in Edinburgh, if not Scotland.

The splashes of red in Shetland confirms it is bollox. Having just been to the Shetland I can concur, everyone I spoke to said they were voting NO. If anything they wanted independence from Scotland and the UK.

The Sports shop used to be in Bruntsfield, but despite still being called Bruntsfield sports, it is now on Morningside Rd not far from the Canny Man. As far as pubs go - there's also the Waiting Room and the Hermitage, both near Morningside Station. Admittedly they are outnumbered by cafes and coffee shops by a ratio of well over 2:1.

A bit close for comfort - but I have long been of the view that if "yes" can't get a clear poll lead at some point, they won't win on the day.
One week to go......

Agree, and also perhaps significant that Labour "Yes" voters much lower than previous online polls have shown (maybe the mass MP visit yesterday was a success?) and the gap in the middle age group is also considerably smaller than other polls have suggested, possibly suggesting they could be effectively outvoted by the "grey" vote which remains overwhelmingly "No" and more likely to turn out.

I wonder if the Yes campaign has peaked too early. The surge last weekend has given the No campaign time to respond.

Well people are bored with the SNP droning on and on and on, the appearance of Nick, Dave, Ed and Gordon may just be right at this time and gee up those voters who were thinking it was all over.

Full ICM result including DKs is
Yes 40% No 42% DK 17%
Mike Smithson makes the observation
Mike Smithson @msmithsonpb 4h Reason why 17% DKs in ICM phone poll compared with 4% YouGov is that the latter are members of polling panel & therefore more engaged
I would think that this level of DKs combined with a high turnout could be good news for No.
