Correct. Ray now works for Nigel Farage so avoids making public comments about the party.

Paul Waugh reports that the Eastleigh writ will be moved tomorrow: This means polling on 28 February. from a forwarded email I can confirm that Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Alistair Carmichael will tomorrow, Thursday 7 February, move the writ to trigger the Eastleigh by-election.
The by-election will be held on Thursday February 28.

Because he's a big footy fan (well, Everton!) and Garrincha (famous Brazilian player from the '50s and '60s) means 'little bird' like a finch...

The by-election will be held on Thursday February 28. Just seen that as well. Keeping it short is the best thing for us. Handily, Eastleigh is a bit of a nexus for Hampshire Lib Dems, just about as central as you can get. On the candidates, if it is the same Tory one as the general, they're setting themselves up to fail, ours will be (or bloody well better be) super local, Labour have the choice of doing what I mentioned earlier in the thread if they want to have a chance of really increasing their vote share (but the profile raising in a very short campaign won't allow any really boost outside of Eastleigh town and Bishopstoke) and Farage making Brown look like a non-bottler means that UKIP are likely to be a mere sideshow (and they could certainly do worse in the event in this white van man land than a 'gobby scouser', either of them).

What was the problem with Maria Hutchings? I've heard plenty of people say she was a poor candidate, but is there any particular reason for that? Any standout examples of lunacy?
As for the Labour candidate, whilst I like Khunanup's suggestion I think it may come down to who is most able to take three weeks off work.

good idea to keep it short, John Dehnam has been put in charge of the campaign for Labour and he does know all abut the politics down there. My guess is thaat he will target the town and try and 'win' that in whatever way that is deemed.
I note our UKIP friends are saying nothing about Farage the chicken.

She was thrown onto the "A-list" in a hurry after getting some TV time for heckling Blair in a hospital visit. Pretty much sums it up.

Is she the one who did that at the QE in Brum ??
BTW I am totally convinced this will be a safe LD hold and all the pressure will be on Cameron come March 1st, the only Question is how close we can get to the Tory vote.

That was Sharon Storer (sp?) during the 2001 GE campaign. Hutchings (from Basildon or thereabouts IIRC) had a go at Blair four years later.

Conservative Central Office must be pissing themselves laughing at that one (those who are old enough to remember Hamilton). So what's the UKIPer slogan "Vote for the Crook, it's important"
