Lowest percentage for a winner in a by-election since when? I'm probably forgetting something very obvious, but it's lower than Hillhead. Curtice said since the war.

UKIP got 28% to the nearest whole percentage point, not 27%.

There was a lower winning percentage in the Combined English Universities byelection in 1946 (30.0%) so it is not quite the lowest since the war, although perhaps University seats ought not to be comparable.
If that's discounted then there are no lower winning percentages since 1918.

Well, at least we saw a proper by-election special.

Terrible performance by LD (-15 lest we forget), terrible for us (-14), terrible for labour (no improvement from 2010). Only one winner tonight. Felt really sorry for Maria who obviously gave her all. Is this the first time a -19% swing has been talked about it in positive terms. Terroble? We held the seat.

A terrible result. You could say this result is UKIP's version of Roy Jenkins in Warrington in 1981. Could UKIP be doing to the Conservatives what the SDP did to Labour? We'll see what the impact of this will be in national opinion polls but the chances of a Labour landslide under Ed Miliband just got stronger.

LD got 32.1% in Feb 2013 and won AV got 32.1% in May 2011 and lost The Liberals also got 32% in 1987 and lost by over 13,000. David Cameron has succeeded in splitting the Conservative vote down the middle

A good result for UKIP - they deserve to be pleased. Interesting what it means for polling companies, none *quite* anticipated the swing to UKIP.

Are you from Preston too? Originally yes, haven't lived there since I was 13. Although all my family have moved back, so I go there regularly.

Nick Robinson commenting on Radio 4 this morning said that UKIP would probably have won 'if Nigel Farage had had the courage to stand'. Doesn't make it true because he said it, but its likely to take hold as part of the narrative
