Thanks but I meant a list for proper council vacancies. I'm not really interested in parish councils full of grumpy old farts and local busibodies that like the sound of their own voice a little bit too much.

Are you claiming that higher level councils are free of same? Haha, no of course not and that includes parliament, but parish councils are the worst by far. Actually, fwiw, not my experience. While I was a borough councillor I regularly attended each month the two parish councils in my ward plus the one I actually lived in (which was in my wife's ward). The level of debate and the understanding of the real issues was far higher at PC level than at BC level, which is not to say there wasn't a bit of Vicar of Dibley stuff, and that the three PC's weren't totally different from each other.

Interesting how everyone who dies does so "sadly". Some at least are, at the time they go, glad to go.

When I last checked the Lewisham Council website I couldn't see notice of either vacancy listed in the first of these two lists btw, but under the circumstances it is a moot point really..... Has anyone tried counting up just how many councillors we have lost to coronavirus? I appreciate there is going to be quite a big grey area where cause of death is unclear, but it must be quite substantial.

Can't agree with that, if someone is suffering death can be a blessed relief for them and their loved ones.

Interesting how everyone who dies does so "sadly". Some at least are, at the time they go, glad to go. That’s a very narrow definition of “sadly”; even if the end of suffering may sometimes but not always be a cause for quiet relief, the loss of companionship and mere presence of a loved one in the lives of those left behind is a cause for sadness, as is the fact that that person had to endure the suffering at all. From hearing the testimonies of those who have recovered from Covid-19 I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

The "sadly died" formulation was of course used by marksenior in his regular rounds ups on this thread - someone who is themselves sadly no longer with us.

I think the vacancy in Chorley, North West ward is due to the death of the Councillor Ralph Snape, Independent rather than Conservative.

Are you claiming that higher level councils are free of same? Haha, no of course not and that includes parliament, but parish councils are the worst by far. I was a town councillor for nine years. There were certainly some people like that, but there were also some people interested in actually doing something. As ever, stereotypes have a basis in fact but are not universally applicable.

As I keep repeating, Tony Greaves is one of very few members of the House of Lords who does have a democratic mandate, having been elected by the delegates to the Liberal Democrat Conference to go onto the Party's list of potential peers.
