The problem is it gets booked so far in advance that it isn't so easy to extend individual bookings.

All the verification (so all the boxes) has to be done at the same time due to ballot papers possibly being in the wrong boxes Only possibly? I've been at plenty of counts where there have been multiple ballot papers over the years, and at such counts I have never once seen a ballot box which didn't have either a wrong ballot paper in it or a ballot that should have been there but was in the other box (and at least 95% of the time, it's been both).

Lots of places just have all the papers stuffed into the same box. Watching how people vote different ways in different elections is part of the fun. But overnight counts should be banned.

But overnight counts should be banned. Heresy! What would we do all night while we wait for the first results?!

Have a good breakfast and then prepare for results at lunchtime and into the eveing when many are not working. Still go to bed at a reasonable time and be in good condition for work on Monday. Polling Day Saturday. Counting Day Sunday.

I'd be happy with this if the polling times were simply shifted a couple of hours earlier. 7am is tight to vote before going to work. If this were shifted earlier, we could close the polls at 8pm and have the first results in about 10.30pm. No need to disturb anyone's sleep too much – we'd generally know who had won by 1am.

No. Have elections on Saturdays. I don't see that working well for Mike Freer.

Thursday is actually a good choice because it isn't a day of religious observance for any group afaik.

Is this because Suffolk is up next year (and so the six month rule applies) and in the case of Ipswich it will be held at the next elections because of the pandemic?
