Feeds the narrative of the liberal democracies' "BallotPaper-fetichism"...

I'm not sure if it was ever mentioned, but Labour won the party vote in all but one electorate. Funnily enough, the one electorate that National won is one they don't even hold-it's Epsom, held by ACT Party Leader David Seymour. This is the standard pattern in MMP landslides, where the loser holds up a lot better in the electorate votes.

The second by-election of 2022 has just happened in Hamilton West where the Labour MP Dr Gaurav Sharma (elected in 2020 having stood in 2017) resigned after falling out with the party hierachy. All sorts of accusations were bandied around - some more believable than others. A pre-Christmas byelection flew under the radar rather and a so a very low turnout. The provisional results showed a National Party victory by 6629 (46.2%) to 4344 (30.3%) with special votes to follow. The ACT party got 10.2%, Dr Sharma (under his new vehicle, the NZ Momentum Party - not related to the UK faction of the Labour Party) 8.1%. The Greens did not stand. In 2020, Labour 51.9% defeated National 36.2%. A pretty conclusive setback for the Labour Party with a 16% swing. Hamilton West is seen as a reliable bellweather seat and has gone with the main governing party since 1996.

Genuine LOL at using that name for a new centrist splinter.
