Last result (from a ballot box in Bay of Plenty) just returned. Final figures show NZ Labour with 49.1% and 64 seats so enough to govern on their own if they want to. Labour has also set a new record for the largest number of votes, and has the highest share of the vote for any party since 1951. I expect the Labour vote to nudge slightly up once the special votes come through, however, how many of those specials from 2017 were early 2020 votes I don't know. Good result for Labour. Could definitely have taken more constituency seats then they did in the end though they more than make up for that with the list. I wonder of the party may be more left leaning in policy with fewer marginal constituency MPs and more national list MPs.

There is something to be said for counting on a polling station basis. What is that something?

Last time he’d been fishing on Election Day and prepared canapés for the journalists. One TV woman said she couldn’t eat it because she was vegan, and within minutes he was out with vegan friendly snacks.

I note that the Labour victor in Wairarapa, Kieran Mcanulty took a call from his National opponent conceding the seat and invited him to come to the Labour election party. Which he did!

Oh to live in a country where civility is a thing! I have a (British) Labour party pamphlet from the 1930s lauding New Zealand's Labour government of the time and the country in general.

If I've been following this correctly, the constituency seats were 43:20 (and 2 others) despite the votes being 49%:27%. Not as much of a landslide as I would expect from such voting figures.
I also realise that I haven't been following NZ elections in anything like as much detail as I did 15 or 20 years ago. Then I used to know a whole lot more about the individual constituencies and politicians than I do now. In about 1998 I casually mentioned to one of my vision NZ cousins that I had met the leader of the NZ Green Party (at a meeting of the Electoral Reform Society) and my cousin didn't even recognise the name.

An interesting Labour gain is Rangitata, based around the South Island port of Timaru. This is real Old Labour (in all senses) territory. Back under the old electoral system, when it had a constituency all to itself, Timaru was notable for swinging hard against first Rogernomics (lost for the first time since the 1920s in a by-election in 1985 and not regained at the 1987 election) and then the doubling-down of this agenda by the Nationals in the 90s (one of Labour's gains in 1993). The last time it has had Labour representation until now was when it was part of the Aoraki constituency, which was lost heavily by a scandal-plagued incumbent in 2005. As Rangitata it had given the Nationals some very large majorities during the Key era.

Also of note: Labour finally oust Nick Smith (a landslide fluke* who stayed in office so long that he ended up as Father of the House) at Nelson.
*First elected for Tasman in Labour's annus horribilis - defeating one of the Douglasites in what had been Bill Rowling's constituency - before following many of his electors to the expanded Nelson in 1996 when Tasman was abolished due to the cut in constituencies necessitated by the new electoral system.

There are still plenty of votes to be counted so things could alter still.
Final results due November 6th? I think.

Hi, I'm a field organiser for Labour in the Auckland Region. Andrew Little resigned this morning and has been replaced by Jacinda Ardern. She was his Deputy and is the obvious choice, being young and vaguely popular, which is a nice change for the NZLP. The last time we changed leader during an election campaign was in 1990, and we improved in the polls by around 5%. If we do the same this time and pull those votes in from National and NZ First instead of from our Green partners, we could be cooking with fire. Nice..Nice call...👍

It would be good to have uhurasmazda 's thoughts on the election once he has recovered from the celebrations.
EDIT: his thoughts on this year's election of course, not 2017. Perhaps a kindly admin could move this post to the newer thread?

Obviously this election was always going to be a shit show but I am pleased to see the ACT make a breakthrough and even more pleased to see NZ First appropriately punished for their treachery. direct desertion from NZF to ACT do you think?

Well that was a most enjoyable watch [watched about 3+ of the 5 hours coverage I would guess]
2 things I would note:
The National party are run by a "board of directors" and the local organisations have no say at all in the running of the party including choosing candidates!! [WOW]
Oh to have a leader with the grace, compassion, style and substance of Ardern; considering what muppets we have to suffer in the UK and USA right now!!
