Fiona McOwan was the Green candidate in Rosyth (below) in 2017. The 2017 boundary changes lost some in the North of this ward, whilst expanding towards the South. In 2007 the old ward elected 2 LDs, 1 Lab and 1 SNP. In 2012 it elected 2 Lab, 1 LD and 1 SNP. In both 2012 and 2017 the sitting SNP councillor lost out to their running mate.

Alastair Macintyre was the independent who got 89 votes in 2017. He was the UKIP candidate here in 2012. He also stood in the Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay by-election last year, getting 40 votes. The top indy in 2017 was an incumbent elected as Labour in 2012. The boundary changes led to Rosyth losing North Queensferry to Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay, but expanding West along the forth to take in Limekilns and Charlestown. In 2007 the old ward had been 1 each for Labour, SNP and LD. In 2012 Labour took the LD seat.

The boundary changes then moved a portion to the South (including the Cathedral and Council HQ) out of the ward and reduced it from 4 members to 3 members. In 2007 it elected 1 Ind, 1 SNP, 1 Lab and 1 LD. In 2012 it elected 1 Ind (the LD elected in 2007, who was also the Indy elected in 2017), 1 Lab and 2 SNP.

The Lib Dem councillor here from 2003 to 2015 was Neil Hughes who has appeared in the 7up television series since 1964, Since 2013 he has been country councillor for the Eden Lakes ward which includes Shap. He clearly had  a big personal vote as shown by the fact he held on in 2011 despite the fact that 2007 result suggested his would be the first seat to fall to the tories if lib dem support fell. The fact that Lib dems failed to take the seat back in May could be due to personal support for Hughes not been carried across to the new lib dem candidate. However in light of what has happened nationally over the last few months the lib dems could take this seat especially if they can squeeze the PCF vote

The name Goodrinton is really taking me back- I first stayed there on holiday very shortly after the war, I think probably in 1946 or just possibly 1947, so the very first holiday of my life, and I still have vivid memories of it. I also remember being back there, what seemed like a lifetime later, in 1957, very early in my university career like in the first week at Exeter, when my "grown up" 18 year old university student self could still think back to my seven year old child self playing on the beach still just about cleared of mines etc as the war had barely ended.

I now need a comparably memorable by-election.

Their candidate did live a little way away and that might have mattered in the Welsh valleys. The Plaid candidate was a former councillor for the ward.
