Perhaps also the sense of the islanders as having a unique identity of almost-nation-state nature has fed into that? There's also the etymology of the Faroes here, for comparison: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands#Etymology(Edit: distinct, rather than unique)

Well, trains have alread made an appearance here. Hmm, I wonder what the pubs are like on the Shetlands, and I wonder how they compare with those in and around Stockport...? Can't speak for the pubs but I'm told by a local they don't like it when people refer to the islands as 'the Shetlands' and that it should always be either 'Shetland' or 'Shetland Islands'. Shetland.

I've heard this before, but (eg) "I'm going to Shetland Islands" sounds a bit odd. I suppose "I'm going to Shetland" sounds better but there isn't actually a place called Shetland so that's also odd." Is this a Viking language legacy where the name of an island group is deemed to include the definite article or something? I appreciate I've allowed the thread to stray off topic by asking 😄 'I'm going to the Shetland Islands' is okay; the place is run by the Shetland Islands Council after all. But most of the time, people actually from there do just say 'Shetland'. It's specifically 'the Shetlands' that they really don't like and that marks out anyone who uses it as a total outsider. They also often refer to the whole of the rest of the UK apart from Orkney as 'Sooth'.

People in Unst refer to Yell as the Sooth.

Scott and Thomson are Independent Shetland councillors, Stout is a former councillor who retired in 2017. Tait is the joint manager of the largest construction company in Shetland.

The Brexit Party sidesteps the question of postal votes for people on different islands from their polling stations.

The only sign of an election I have seen so far is Ian Scott's van which accuses the Liberal Democrats of every wrong committed since the dawn of time, and extra. It was parked up in Lerwick.
Sturgeon was here posing as a Viking, for the LD's Cole Hamilton et al have visited.
The Islands are quite amusing in their way; on Yell the Scottish Tourist Board emblem on the brown signs has been spray painted out by an enterprising individual; left untouched on Unst

A new electoral changes order has been published: The Representation of the People Act 1983 Remedial (Scotland) Order 2019 (S.S.I. 2019/261). Allows prisoners serving sentences of twelve months or less, who would otherwise have been resident in Shetland, to vote in the Shetland by-election on 29 August 2019. Prisoners registered to vote under this Order will only be able to vote by post. A prisoner's registration to vote under this Order will expire after the by-election is over. This is a consequence of the European Court of Human Rights decision in Hirst v UK that the UK's ban on prisoners voting is incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights. The provisions of the order mirror a bill currently going through the Scottish Parliament, which will give prisoners serving sentences of twelve months or less the right to vote in Scottish local government elections and, by extension, Scottish Parliament elections. (This post has been cross-posted to the Local Government Boundary Changes thread.)

Don't they read prisoners' mail before it's sealed? If so, how would a secret postal ballot be compatible?
I suspect somehow prisoners will not appear on the list of exceptional reasons the anti-PV campaigners come out with.

The Scottish Greens phoned my father in the far north soliciting his vote this evening. They met a chilly response.

Nor would complying with the opinion of a european court be on my list of good reasons to do something.

The ECHR is not part of the EU, as countless leave campaigners pointed out in 2016.

I think the concept of driving licenses for all is already more or less dead outside of rural areas with poor bus/rail links. Many people prefer to use public transport for environmental reasons, or because they don't feel comfortable driving. Or because they are failures. I'm a failure. It ain't so bad.
