Or because they are failures. I assume you know that the Blessed Margaret never actually said that? Out of interest, could she actually drive?

I think the concept of driving licenses for all is already more or less dead outside of rural areas with poor bus/rail links. Many people prefer to use public transport for environmental reasons, or because they don't feel comfortable driving. Or because they are failures. Why would choosing not to drive make someone a failiure? A lot of younger people do not learn to drive these days, and certainly in some larger cities (e.g. Birmingham) the percentage of journeys made by car is falling. Of all the ways of assessing the success of a person's life, whether they choose to drive is probably the most bizzare.

A vox poll in the Shetland Times has been trumpeted as a possible upset. Out of 100 people interviewed, 31 plumped for the SNP, 27 for the LD's and the rest didn't care.

I have occasionally thought about what the likely minimum and maximum numbers of votes for winning candidates in Parliamentary elections would likely to be. The lowest reasonably likely number would happen in a constituency with a low electorate, a low turnout, and a low percentage for the winning candidate. For example, and electorate of 20,000, a turnout of 25%, and a winning share of 30% for the winning candidate, would produce a winning score of 1,500 votes. This by-election is a rare opportunity to get close to that . Shetland has a very small electorate, of course, although there is not likely to be a very low turnout. It might be interesting if the LibDem vote is split by some of the independent candidates, and/or the SNP.

1.) Certainly not a car. 2.) The comparison between renting and using public transport is complete nonsense.

I don't drive. I would not drive no matter how much money I had. And yes, no one really wants to rent (unless they need to stay somewhere for a shorter time perhaps) because owning your home provides more stability.

There are surely very few people who don't want to know how to drive, even if they don't plan to have a car. I don't buy the notion that 'more and more people' are choosing not to learn- I've got colleagues between 18-25 who are all either learning, want to learn or who have passed (even if they can't afford the cripplingly expensive insurance).

And yes, no one really wants to rent (unless they need to stay somewhere for a shorter time perhaps) because owning your home provides more stability. It's an exaggeration to say 'no one'. The Scottish Household Survey for instance generally suggests that roughly half of social renters in Scotland regard social rent as their preferred tenure. One of my grandmothers has lived her entire life in social rented housing and it genuinely suits her -- it means that she has recently been supported to move into a bungalow on the same estate with minimum hassle, whereas the whole process would have been far more stressful for her of she had had to sell her house and look for somewhere in her late 80s. What does seem to be clear is very few people ideally want to live in the private rented sector in the long term, however.

I've never wanted to learn to drive and it predates any environmental concern. It just looks really complicated and not something I've ever had the urge to do.

I had quite a few lessons in the 1990s but never passed my test, and now feel little inclination to start trying to again.

Had a few lessons, didn't get on with it (never took the test). Decided public transport and my own two feet are a better option. These days feel slightly smug about the modes of transport I prefer anyway being green options.

I don't drive. I live in places where you don't need to.

I had quite a few lessons in the 1990s but never passed my test, and now feel little inclination to start trying to again. I had a few lessons in my late teens, at the urging of my parents, but didn't enjoy driving and stopped long before my test. Living in London there have been few occasions where I have found being a non-driver seriously inconvenient. The cost of the few journeys a year that I make by taxi is negligible. Sometimes having a car would be nice when travelling for pleasure, but the loss is not great.

This probably explains non-driving for a significant number of us, just like why I never put myself in situations where I'm expected to catch balls, do co-ordinated dance routines or stay upright on roller skates. "To be able to steer a car, concentrate, judge distance, use both hands and feet together and remember how to carry out a sequence of tasks all at the same time is very daunting. It is hardly surprising that many of us who have dyspraxia decide that driving a car is beyond our capabilities." dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk/dyspraxia-adults/driving/

To my knowledge, I do not have dyspraxia, but I did find co-ordinating the various activities very difficult.

I have very poor coordination - never any good at sports. Had seven driving lessons when I was 21. Disastrous.
My partner drives and has the car and I couldn't really justify having a second car. And if I'm working in the city centre the train or bus is easier

I had quite a few lessons in the 1990s but never passed my test, and now feel little inclination to start trying to again. Same here. It wasn't the kind of thing I'm good at learning. And since then, I've never had the time, money, and inclination together. Ironically most of the (rare) occasions I think "it would be useful if I had a car right now" are related to the Green Party.
