To state the obvious, it significantly depends on the candidates. Though it shouldn't be forgotten UKIP had a big opportunity with the 2014 S Yorks PCC byelection and messed it up.

In the Euros, I make it: Brexit 35.8; Labour 20.7; Lib Dem 18.2; Green 8.6; Con 6.7; UKIP 6.0; Change 3.9.

Which, applying the sort of changes between the Euro result and Thursday in Peterborough, could point to a Labour hold but maybe a close one?

Students gone, summer holidays, election fatigue, unimportant position. How bad can turnout get? That's a point, I reckon I will make up at least 10% of the student vote at this election.

Which, applying the sort of changes between the Euro result and Thursday in Peterborough, could point to a Labour hold but maybe a close one? An additional factor might be a vague feeling that major parties are likely to select someone with some sort of track record so can be trusted more. BxP would need a blinding candidate to get around this perception- the local version of Ray Mallon or John Harvey Jones. I wouldn't have voted for Vera Baird but it's hard to argue that a female QC who had been a minister didn't have credibility (which may also be the reason Prezza lost).

Unless, of course, there's so little interest that there are only 2 candidates.

Can the next gvt abolish these positions? Ta. It was in Labour’s 2015 manifesto to abolish PCCs, not sure if it survived into 2017 though.

I have always argued that we should stand under the label "Liberal Democrat - Abolish Police Commissioners".

I have always argued that we should stand under the label "Liberal Democrat - Abolish Police Commissioners". The Lib Dems did help to bring them about in the first place, mind. Is that not what edgbaston meant by "Metro busybodies"?? i thought he meant the metro mayors of Manchester, Liverpool et al which have quite a lot of power. I meant the city region mayor in Sheffield which has none Ah yes, that particular 'mayor' is an especially peculiar case all of its own.

Labour candidate is Kim McGuinness, a cabinet member in Newcastle Does anyone know if she was selected by a members' ballot, or was she imposed? It seems like there wasn't much time for a selection process.
