By-election in Champion Hill ward in LB Southwark now expected, presumably on 7 May: You can go around expecting what you want, but nothing there indicates he will be resigning from his council seat. Ex leaders normally like to hang around for a short time at least, unless they have new jobs that conflict with remaining on the council. You are quite right of course Davıd Boothroyd, but I have it on good authority from a London local government source that he will resign his seat too. Let's wait and see if he does....

I've heard a juicy rumour about why he has resigned which I'm reluctant to share.
(Not a hidden scandal of any sort, in case anyone's speculating)

I do not understand Ideal4Radio's reference to parties delaying polls. The Local Government Act 1972 is very clear. Where a vacancy occurs, an election is called by an two electors of that authority requesting it in writing to the proper officer, whether or not they live in the ward where the vacancy exists. It is not in the power of the returning officer, his staff or political parties to call an election. Where a party wishes to call an election, they arrange for two electors to do the necessary. If the major parties try to save costs by avoiding a by-election in a safe seat, they cannot prevent two electors from calling the election. Parliamentary by elections have frequently been delayed by the defending party as the convention, not always followed, is that the writ is moved by the Chief Whip of the relevant party ... btw, the Commons briefing paper I saw stated that there have been 504 Parliamentary by elections from 1945 - 2019 ... an average of 6.8 per year, which seemed high to me. They are becoming less common, as MP's are generally younger, healthier and live longer than previously ... There were 239 Parliamentary by elections between 1945 - 1965, an average of 12 every year, or one a month !

Councillor David Owen, Independent, Nant-y-moel ward, Bridgend CBC has been jailed for 3 years for conspiracy to steal and handling stolen goods He'll be automatically disqualified if he doesn't appeal either verdict or sentence within the 21 days allowed. I think that's 21 calendar days so the seat will be vacant on 24 March absent an appeal. democratic.bridgend.gov.uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=53&LLL=0

Tonia Ashikodi, Greenwich councillor for Glyndon ward, given a suspended prison sentence over the housing fraud she was convicted of last month. The sentence will disqualify her if not appealed (but she would be mad to appeal what seems distinctly on the lenient side).

Jane Baugh (Priory, Trafford), has died. Was re-elected for Labour in 2018, so likely to be a double election in May. Bloody hell. She was my councillor once upon a time. A bit of a fixture on the scene (no mean feat, given that her ward colleague is Barry Brotherton, who first represented the area during the Rump Parliament).

I raised this question a couple of years ago, and it still seems a good idea to me .... Instead of having weekly, or nearly weekly by-elections, we should adopt a system of Quarter Days to fill any elected positions that have become vacant. If we base it from the 1st Thursday in May, then by-elections would be held on the first Thursdays in August, November & February, as well as May. It would do away with the six month rule, do away with party's delaying polls and the requirement for electors to request a by-election. Should a vacancy occur, due to disbarrment, death or resignation, with 28 days or more remaining to a " Quarter Day ", then it is held on that fixed day. If it's less than 28 days, then it's held on the next date. I'm sure someone with better information than me could tell me how many by-elections for Parliament, MSP's, AM's, London Assembly Members, County, Borough, Town and Parish Councillors there are in an average year .... 250 ?? It would tidy matters up, people would know where they stand, as well as giving some proper voting figures UK wide ( from say 55-65 seats ) for us to get our teeth into ... Any thoughts ? It's an unbelievably idiotic idea, and you must be unbelievably idiotic if such an idea has ever even occurred to you, let alone that you think that it would be a good idea. Quite obviously - so obviously that it should not be necessary to state how obvious it is, except for the benefit of someone who is unbelievably idiotic - it would be doubleplusbonkers and triplemultiplicationludicrous to force the electors of one ward in one local authority to remain unrepresented for up to 3 months longer than they would otherwise need to be, just on the pretext of "needing" to hold the by-election on the same day as other by-elections in other (completely unrelated) local authorities.

Notice of election due imminently. Called for April 9th. Ridiculous that they could not have waited until Mayoral election in May. But perhaps we will all be isolated by then.
