The Brent website says the deadline for nominations to stand in the 3 by-elections for 4 seats to be contested on 23 January is 4 pm on Wednesday 24th December.
I realise London is a different world to the rest of the country.

On the Hartlepool vacancy, has the order gone through Parliament yet? If not, there could still be a by-election if someone got on and called it???

The only orders currently before Parliament which affect the 2020 local elections are a rewarding order for Halton, an amendment to the Rotherham rewarding order which affects only Bramley parish council, and the structural changes in Northamptonshire. Everything else has got through in good time.

Andy Harland, Clayton and Openshaw, Manchester CC, has died. Covered by the six month rule.

Any guess as to how many council by-elections will result from new MPs standing down in their council seats? Presumably most will take place in May 2020.

Kumail Jaffer (Lab, Kenilworth ward) has resigned from Hertsmere council. Story here. He has a new job as a journalist in Scotland.

I note that he won a drawing of lots against his party colleague rather than an opponent - I'm sure it does happen but I can't recall any instance reported on this site.

And happy new year to you, Finso. One would have thought in intra-party ties of this nature there would be a conversation between the candidates; usually one of them would be 'keener' to be elected and their colleague would defer to them.

I think I recall that it happened some years back between two Lib Dems in Chesterfield - they tied for 3rd and 4th places and drew lots. I witnessed it between two different parties in 1986 in Blackfen in LB of Bexley - 2nd Tory and top LD tied for 2nd place. They put two envelopes in a hat, one with a ballot paper inside, and told Jim (the LD) that if he picked out the one with the ballot paper, he'd won. He did (fortunately - he was the group leader). Officially, they put one more vote on his tally

The Conservative comments are ridiculous particularly with Mason having remained a Cllr since 2017 but what else would one expect.

23 January- 5 Brent LBC- Alperton- Labour resignation. Brent LBC- Barnhill- 2 vacancies- 2x Labour resignation Brent LBC- Wembley Central- Labour resignation A question asked of me elsewhere, and I don't have the answer - why have four Labour councillors resigned in Barry Gardiner's seat? Conspiracy, cockup or coincidence?

Once one councillor has resigned and there's going to have to be a byelection, the additional disturbance of a second byelection in a nearby ward is much less - so any other councillors nearby who are weighing up whether to resign immediately or stick it out until the end of their term have less incentive to keep at it. The two councillors from Barnhill ward who have resigned, Michael Pavey and Sarah Marquis, are partners and both cite family reasons. Luke Patterson (Wembley Central) said being a councillor was incompatible with his other commitments. All three seem to be teachers, which is a fairly difficult job to fit round council commitments. James Allie in Alperton is a different situation - he has some legal issues to deal with.
