One does wish that a bit of due diligence was carried out on joiners from, well, any organisation with a present or past connection with Gorgeous George. As Peter has already pointed out he is a well known figure in Tower Hamlets politics and given the merry go round of defections and associated baggage, this was entirely predictable. Yes, I know. And while I understand our keenness to re-establish a presence in LBTH, ensuring that potential members - and especially council candidates - have read, understood and agreed with at least the preamble to our constitution (it's not long, and not difficult) should be a minimum requirement for acceptance.

I think i've mentioned this before but it reminds me of an incident in Haringey a few years back. One of our party members was desperate to stand for the council, but we knew there were good reasons why he shouldn't, so he wasn't allowed on the list.
He then shoved off to the Lib Dems, where he was welcomed with open arms and an effusive press release (possibly accompanied by a photo staring at some bags of rubbish) and the implication that he would soon be a Lib Dem candidate, and a side swipe at the terrible old Labour party. We even shared our info about what was likely to come out, but it was ignored. So then the housing benefit fraud emerged.... and he disappeared, never to be seen again.

David makes aninteresting point about the name of the Liberal Democrat candidate for Lansbury. In the elections of 2002/06/10 when standing as a Labour candidate he was nominated as Abdul Asad. In 2014 when standing for Tower Hamlets First he was nominated as Abul Asad. In 2018 standing for PATH, he was nominated as Muhammed Abul Asad and in 2019 standing as a Liberal Democrat he is again nominated as Muhammed Abul Asad. In his literature he is described as Abdul Asad, with a d.
Whatever the name, he is definately the same person.
During the 2014-18 council one of his more interesting colleagues in Tower Hamlets First was known as Councillor G(h)ulum, with or without an H Robbani and this actually appeared in motions before the council.
Terry of the House Party has been connected with both the Liberal Democrats and the Greens. Last weekend he was distributing a twelve page election address with two additional inderts. Internally most pages were divided into two columns of dense script.

Is that 'inserts' with a d?

Not that I'm about to enter the predicition competition, but in Terry's case i suspect the answer to this will be.... a great deal.

A quick check from an on-line printing service that I use - 12pp A5 full colour 90gsm self-cover 2-loop stitched brochure, £186 for 1,000 copies, £277 for 2,000. Knock £60 or so off if going B/W instead of full colour. That's just for the printing, add more on for design.

Amused that the local press think that "local residents will vote in droves".

We have had such ... characters ... approach us. We have turned them down at the Approval stage. It's not rocket science.

The problem is that when they come with a substantial personal vote and/or their own activists, it can be hard for weak local parties to resist...

The Labour party might not be commenting on what's going on, but the police sure are:

I wonder how many voters will hear about the arrest before the election or will care. Wimbledon in 2017 was an example of this, I think.

Depends entirely on how many leaflets can be printed and delivered by the other parties before Thursday.

I nominate this week for the prize of the most eccentric set of by-elections this year. Come 31st December I guess it will still win.
