There was at one time a series of videos on YouTube made by various crackpots and looneytunes, which were quite entertaining, and which claimed that the Conservatives only won the 2015 election due to election rigging. There were claims made about van loads of ballot papers going missing, etc etc. There was no evidence for this other than the claim by the video maker. But I noticed that one particular video had many thousands of views and likes. That made me wonder how many people actually accepted the claims in the video, which wouldn't have withstood even mildest of scrutiny? In the earlier days of postal votes it would have been relatively easy for postal vote fraud to take place. Basically anyone could register to vote. But in the 2010 election there was significant evidence of postal vote fraud in areas with high Pakistani/Bangladeshi populations. Halifax, Tower Hamlets and Leicester being examples. This is what brought about a tightening of the system and rightly so. The integrity of the ballot is far more important than a little bit of difficulty for the odd voter. Has there been fraud in Peterborough? It is hard to say, but obviously it is much more difficult to do it these days with security checks and so on. In the EU elections I heard many people claiming that the count was held back until Sunday so as the vote could be rigged. Obviously we know why it was held back but these people seriously believed it. I wonder how stupid they felt when the Brexit Party romped away with most of the seats? Im afraid that you will find that most Brexiters are as thick as pig shit and will believe any guilible lie that they are told. That may your opinion, sir. But I am sure that as pig shit-like as they may be, they can spell "gullible" correctly. I would add that I think you may be writing off a lot of people who are perhaps demonstrably more intelligent than you appear to be. Was it not Mr Clegg who described plans for an EU army as Europhobe fantasy? Are you denying such plans exist today? Perhaps Mr Clegg is as thick as the Porcine excrement you referred to earlier? Was the Euroskeptic lobby wrong about the Euro? Italy has seen no growth since its inception, falling way behind similar economies that it once stood shoulder to shoulder with. Was it not the LibDems who were particularly keen to join the currency. Yet, had we joined it we would have been in serious economic decline by 2008/09/10.

And here's the BBC report. Is it unusual for 400 PVs to be rejected for the details not matching council records?

"Police have been asked to investigate a claim, made on social media, that an individual burned more than 1000 votes destined for the Brexit Party" Yep, sounds totally credible and legit this

And the inevitable consequence: Gosh, it seems that a lot of conspiracy theory peddled on the internet and elsewhere, largely by supporters of the Brexit Party, with a strong tinge of Islamophobia, turned out to be a load of nonsense. I'm shocked.

Don't forget Rod Liddle's contribution to this "debate".

Don't forget Rod Liddle's contribution to this "debate". Liddle has been a shit-stirrer since his schooldays, speaking from personal reminiscence.

The Brexit Party is going to bring a petition:

References to a "corrupt agent" shows that they are trying to avoid the election over the role of Tariq Mahmood, and under the fairly antiquated provisions of s. 165 of the Representation of the People Act 1983. Note that the term "agent" in election petition law does not refer to the single agent appointed by the candidate, but far wider to anyone with a formal role in the campaign. The problem with this is that the wording of the section specifies that election is only avoided if the agent is "subject to an incapacity to vote". Even if Mahmood was found to be an agent (which must be very dubious), his conviction in April 2008 would only have led to his being unable to vote for five years, a period which has long since expired.

I don't recall Farage having an issue with postal votes back in 2016 when it was widely considered that postal votes in the referendum were more pro-Brexit than the votes on the day.

It seems in part to be a continuation of a campaign. For those who haven't seen the video Farage gave service personnel and 94 year olds in wheelchairs as cases where he supports postal votes but notably had nothing to say about other common cases (employment, education) or suggest any alternative methods to solve the being away from the designated polling station during limited hours problem. However they seem to have decided to focus on the pre 2001(?) arrangement as the model to return to.

... being away from the designated polling station during limited hours problem. (My emphasis) As has been pointed out before, our polling hours are 07:00 - 22:00, in other words for 15 hours. These are among the longest single-day polling hours anywhere in the world. If you're suggesting that we allow voting in person for more than one day, let's hear that suggestion. As things stand, these polling hours will be sufficient for almost everybody who wishes to vote in person, to vote, and genuine exceptions* should be accommodated by a postal or proxy vote.
* E.g. absence due to employment, education, illness, pre-booked holiday.

I don't recall Farage having an issue with postal votes back in 2016 when it was widely considered that postal votes in the referendum were more pro-Brexit than the votes on the day. Douglas Carswell launched a pre-emptive strike, publicly telling Farage he didn't want to wake up to a narrow Remain victory and Farage moaning about postal votes, he wanted to see the Leave campaign run a proper PV effort. Another piece of Farage's comments in that press conference were very telling. He repeated his whine about the postal votes being sent out before other parties had had a chance to campaign. Campaigns do not start at the close of nominations. Campaigning is ongoing and stepped up when key elections are looming or likely - it's been nearly a year since Onasanya was first charged and the by-election sirens will have been sounding back then. But Farage parties only seem to turn up once there's a vacancy. They're always going to struggle against parties that have been stepping up the ground operation for a good while.

An acute observation. The key in this seems to be the claim that "the establishment is untrustworthy", to position BxP as the party of protest. It'd fit with the stuff about using M5S as a model. I question the strategy unless behind the scenes he intends the party to get much better at electoral ground war (quite doable, starting from a base of zero). We in the LDs hate FPTP but are arguably the best party in the country at gaming that system (going for swing voters, hitting local issues in a topographically based system, squeezing, targetting, campaigning all-year round) because we have to be to stand a chance. I don't detect comparable thinking from Farage here. Carswell was right IMO and a loss to the UKIP/BxP cause.

The Brexit Party is going to bring a petition: I hope for their sake they have some actual evidence. If it's just a load of huff and puff about "ooh, aren't postal votes terrible" but without anything concrete to back it up then they're going to make themselves look ridiculous. That's assuming this "petition" is actually a serious exercise, rather than yet another way of pursuing the Forever Culture Wars......

PS possibly belongs on the other thread, but the issue here is one reason why it might not be wise of the Conservatives to delay the Brecon and Radnor by-election too long, since the LDs have been up for this for a bit already. Unless, I suppose, they feel their prime enemy is BxP and want to work Con-BxP swing voters hard for a bit.
