Did have a majority of 22 in February 1974. Yes. Peterborough has had a large number of very close finishes. I believe that Sir Harmar Nicholls holds the record for the largest number of recounts undergone by any parliamentary candidate. I think there was one last year too. Indeed there was-in Kensington of all places, won by Labour by 20 votes on the final recount.

I think barnaby means that there was a re-count in Peterborough last year, as well as in elections past.

This was the most pro-Brexit seat that labour picked up in 2017, no? Interesting...

According to the ever-accurate and up-to-date Wikipedia he's resident in Hay-on-Wye, but I'd sooner believe your recollection of a conversation with him. @priceofdawn has clearly never heard Harris speak, though. He's originally from Cheshire!

He's originally from Cheshire! His Wiki does seem very odd- that description of him going to Oxford neither sounds right nor appears anywhere else that I can see. But he is indeed from Cheshire. He went to Wilmslow High, which does have a bit of a reputation as one of those Selection By Houseprice comps, but it would be a stretch to call him posh!

Cheshire has several different accents. The north-eastern bit and Wirral is a slightly refined Scouse accent. Chester is similar but sounds slightly more Welsh. In the north-west you get a middle-class Manchester/Stockport accent. Congleton and south east Cheshire are mostly Potteries-influenced. Crewe is almost impossible to separate because the railway has drawn people from all over.

My first job was in an office in Wilmslow and the staff came from various places including Macclesfield. We had a couple of exiled Yorkshiremen and a couple of Mancs. The working class rural Macc accent was certainly the hardest to pin down.

Much of Flintshire and north Denbighshire sounds sort of Scouse, and not stereotypically Welsh at all, to my ears at least. Taekwondo champion Jade Jones is from Flint, but until I was told I wouldn't have thought she was Welsh. But perhaps it's more that the Scouse accent has been influenced by the north Walian accent than the other way round. It's suggested that the Liverpool accent has changed quite a bit over the last 150 years, due to inward migration both from Ireland and from Wales. Contemporaneous accounts suggest that Liverpool native Wm Ewart Gladstone's accent was much more typical of Lancashire as a whole - think how folk from St Helens sound today and you get the idea.
