She might well given all that is at stake. It's life changing for her Having wasted two trials-worth of public money trying to defend herself with a pretty flimsy case, I hope she thinks twice if not three times about that and then accepts her fate. The case against her was overwhelming. Huhne saw that before his trial and decided to plead guilty. She should now belatedly accept that she was done bang to rights. I concur with your views entirely but I suspect, like you, I aren't holding my breath

Assuming there is going to be a byelection, what do we think about the possibility of Patrick O'Flynn standing for the SDP, he looks set to be unemployed shortly, lives not that far away, must have some name recognition in the constituency, a good opportunity to get some traction for his new party. Peterborough should be somewhere where they could do well. A nastier thought: Stephen Yaxley-Lennon/"Tommy Robinson" might feel as if he could do well in this seat, especially given the general political environment. How about the following SOPN, eh? Labour - Helen Clark Conservative - Stewart Jackson Liberal Democrat - Gary Lineker Independent - George Galloway Pro-Brexit something or other party - Nigel Farage SDP - Patrick O'Flynn UKIP - Tommy Robinson One way or another it's going to be a tremendous bunfight when it happens.

I predict a visit to the tomb of Katharine of Aragon and much discussion of the word Posh.

He'll be at the head of the queue. To be fair he doesn't live in London though - isn't he in Frome?

Particularly when she must be aware of Chris Huene....I may have forgotten how to spell his name now. Its really about the arrogance of power. When they get public office they change into different person, a very important person. Humility does not come easily with politics. At least Huhne confessed his sins at an early stage. If were her I would have a long serious talk with him or the Reverend Jonathan Aitken they would put her straight. Not sure if this is the reason. Isn't it simply a case of "****, this is going to be a huge inconvenience and could be embarrassing if it gets publicity. I'll say it was someone else - they've no way of finding out..." ?

In fairness to Fiona, she probably won't go around calling random people 'chavs' if/when she resigns.

Are you going for under-statement of the year, David? This is almost certainly going to result in a term of imprisonment, I would have thought. Not quite as bad a Chris Huhne because she hasn't instigated another person to lie for her as far as I know. So, maybe three or four months would appear to be the order of the day. What are we on, Chiltern or Northstead. A hundred pound fine and three point, or a Driver Awareness course must look pretty attractive from where she is sitting now We're on Chiltern, she would replace Barry McElduff. Jesus, what an act to follow.

There are two blokes in Russia who can probably tell you all about how Its 44m high tower and romanesque gothic design is famous throughout the world.

Isn't it simply a case of "****, this is going to be a huge inconvenience and could be embarrassing if it gets publicity. I'll say it was someone else - they've no way of finding out..." ? The thing that gets me is the arrogance - not so much to try and pull this off, but to attempt to bare faced lie ones way through two trials where you are pretty clearly bang to rights. I've been nicked for various motoring offences over the years (driving north of 30k miles a year doesn't help). I reckoned I win a set of 3 points every 3 years, which is irritating but one lives with it. However after a very unfortunate series of pretty freak events I found myself up in front of the beak with 12 points and with the prospect of a ban. It took the CPS 10 months to get from the day of the offence to court, despite my returning the paperwork promptly, and indicating my intention to plead guilty, and ask to preserve my licence on the grounds of exceptional hardship (essentially my grounds were that banning me was probably going to wipe out the struggling small business I manage(but don't own!), and put half a dozen people out of work). That 10 months wait was unbelievably stressful (so much so I developed a stutter from the stress). All this said, while I briefly imagined convoluted approaches to try to wriggle out of being nicked, it was pretty clear to me that the only sensible thing was to be totally honest, admit what I was charged with, express suitable contrition, explain some mitigating circumstances, and take what I was given like a man. After my 10 months wait, it took about 15 mins in court to plead guilty, be fined a few hundred quid and be allowed to keep my licence. I think a lot of MPs do get a sense of entitlement, and see themselves as above the "little people" and that is why some of them are prepared to try stunts like this - I think possibly they tend to be so egocentric they've no idea how arrogantly they come across. One other thought which might possibly be a bit near the bone - Onasanya's parents come from a country which put bluntly is a low trust society where barefaced lying is pretty much run of the mill. I think this background could be a cultural factor in her "when in a hole, keep digging and hope to arrive in Australia" approach to being on trial. Our culture values people accepting responsibility for their actions and owning up to our misdeeds (hence we give people sentence discounts for early guilty pleas), but this is not equally true of all cultures.

no it wasn't. Conservativeestimate was right. The Conservatives held Peterborough by 3 votes in 1966 and didn't lose the seat until October 1974 when Michael Ward (the loser in 1996) gained the seat. Yeah he gained it on his fourth attempt only to lose it in ‘79.

There are two blokes in Russia who can probably tell you all about how Its 44m high tower and romanesque gothic design is famous throughout the world. I'm sure they had more pressing matters on their minds than to notice the architectural wonder that is Salisbury Cathedral... That's not what they claimed and, to be fair, it would seem plausible to any Russian buying into their story that they'd take note: apparently it's something of a custom there to take note of details like that as a tourist.

Labour - Helen Clark Conservative - Stewart Jackson Liberal Democrat - Gary Lineker Independent - George Galloway Pro-Brexit something or other party - Nigel Farage SDP - Patrick O'Flynn UKIP - Tommy Robinson It's perfect, apart from the fact that Stewart Jackson isn't the candidate and has endorsed somebody else, Nigel Farage hasn't registered a new party yet, and Tommy Robinson isn't a member of UKIP.
