For all our mockery of dubious defections, never rule out a principled one where they know they will lose but do it because they want to prove a point. Come now, all those 'senior councillors' who detect do so on principle. The principle that they've just been deselected.

Would there be any traction in forming an inner-party faction (Real Labour or Inclusive Labour)rather than leaving the party? Perhaps even going so far as to draw up an alternative programme and to appoint faction spokesmen on all the major offices. In other words set up an alternative decent honest untainted Labour for people to rally round.

They already have that. I think the defectors might consider calling themselves Not Labour, or A Bit Tory, Really

Kate Hoey or Frank Field won't go. Mavericks who wouldn't fit into other parties any better

Kate Hoey or Frank Field won't go. Mavericks who wouldn't fit into other parties any better No party big enough to hold 'em. They're having far too much fun where they are for one thing.....

An interesting possibility. Baroness Jenny Tonge - independent and former LD peer and strong supporter of the Palestinian cause has said she is an enthusiast for Labour under Jeremy Corbyn.
I'd welcome this one. Always been a great admirer and despite its image the LD's are a very Zionist party.

I can think of at least two who I would think more likely than some on this list. But I don't think anyone will defect unless they are retiring anyway. I would guess maybe four over the parliament. Not necessarily all to the Lib-deems.

That list is indeed a load of bollards - and when did odds of 50/1 against ever previously mean that something was "likely"?? Everybody is aware that CityAM is the most appalling propagandist hard right rag, no?

I dont think i'll take up the 10/1 odds on the first Labour defection heading to the Greens.

Unlikely, it seems - Hoey has actually been a lot less anti-Corbyn than several Labour MPs, and even Field says he "understands" why Jez has been elected.

Frank Field nominated Jeremy Corbyn, so it would look a tad hypocritical for him to defect on the grounds of Corbyn's fundamental unsuitability. And Kate Hoey likes his inclination to be sceptical on Europe; also remember Kate Hoey has some history on the far left.

David, I am pretty sure Frank Field only nominated Jeremy Corbyn so that there could be a useful leadership debate-many of Frank's views are incompatible with Jeremy's overall stance.

Back on topic - hearing rumours of a 'hush hush' guest speaker at UKIP conference. Clearly some are already talking of a defection, with (unsurprisingly perhaps) the MP for Rochdale being touted as a possibility.

He said pretty unambiguously on Twitter the other day that he wasn't going anywhere. Of course that doesn't in itself mean he won't, but......
