I will actually say that making that type of decision is not easy. So credit to Labour for it.

Am reliably informed that there'll be some councillors defecting to Ukip in Yorkshire tomorrow. Don't know any more than that though, sadly.

Ah, I never said that was going to happen today. I just said 'some councillors defecting to Ukip in Yorkshire tomorrow. Don't know any more than that though, sadly.'

I've seen a tweet mentioning that there will be 3 North York district councillor defections announced today at 5pm. www.twitter.com/ellyfyork

There's mention of a Hillingdon councillor defecting to UKIP. No details yet.
Anyone know whom it might be?

I am sure that, if UKIP continue to rise in the polls and Tory morale continues to stagnate, there will be many further defections to UKIP. I suspect there are plenty of Tory councillors who would have liked to make the move but feared that it would lead to the certain loss of their council seat. With UKIP getting double-digit opinion poll ratings and coming within 1500 votes of winning a parliamentary by-election, they will figure that they might have a decent chance of holding on in their new purple colours. I wonder if there will be any councils where a substantial contingent cross the floor? I wonder if the Tories could lose control of any councils as a result? Also, I know this is fanciful, but is there the possibility of UKIP taking control of a council through defections, like the SDP in Islington in 1981? the Conservatives have lost overall control of Lewes DC following 2 defections to UKIP .

I know of the one in Barcombe & Hamsey. Where is the other?

This sounds like a Robo-ism, but I guess the 'push' needed to give UKIP defections wider attention in the media will be provided only when a serving MP jumps. I think the mood music is such that it doesn't even have to be a high-profile member either.

Of course the worst thing for UKIP at the moment would be to actually take control of a council and try to put its policies into action.

Of course the worst thing for UKIP at the moment would be to actually take control of a council and try to put its policies into action. That rather depends. There are some very competent people about in UKIP who have been quite successful councillors - Peter Reeve in Ramsey fore instance. Then again, there are plenty of people on the ballot to make the numbers up who may not be the world's best councillors.

Peter Reeve has been quite successful at building a base, but he's never had to wield any administrative responsibility on the county council and he's not been above taking advantage of the fact he has no real power to dramatically over-promise. I'm not sure that necessarily translates into being a good portfolio holder.

I'm not sure that necessarily translates into being a good portfolio holder. Indeed. Before that happens the test for Reeve is to see whether we can break out of our Ramsey stronghold and win seats elsewhere. At last years' district elections too much effort was put into winning the third seat in Ramsey ward with as big a majority as possible.

Then again, there are plenty of people on the ballot to make the numbers up who may not be the world's best councillors. That applies to the Tories, Labour, LibDems, Greens and probably everyone else as well!
