Wonder what favours Farage will give Murdoch then ? Well, since Farage doesn't have any MPs, not a lot.

doktorb to join the Tories (or UKIP)? Judging by his recent postings he would be more at home there! He does seem to have *gone native* since the formation of the coalition. I would definatley welcome him into the tory ranks. We need more libertarians, following the defection of the tea-party esque brigade to UKIP. Wonder when he will come out of the closet?

Oh come off it. Few people have had more of go at doktorb than me but this is really silly. He has still been very critical of the Tories at times particularly over them being less enthusiastic than him on the subject of constitutional vandalism reform.

He was love bombed prior to the last general as well by Tories. Sometimes (as on the Leveson outcomes) his dislike of Labour makes him come across as more pro Tory than he actually is. Still he's operating in an environment where Labour are the overbearing, clear common enemy so perhaps that's no so surprising. I don't really see anything he says as being incompatible with our party (including flat tax, not least because where it exists in Estonia, the two biggest parties are Liberal parties).

Wasn't endemic tax evasion a major reason for Estonia's introduction of a flat tax? For all our problems, HMRC is much more efficient than its equivalents in Soviet successor states.

So with the definite exception of Fianna Fáil , I'll stick with LI members being Liberals.

Yes, and (I think but Erlend would know much better than anyone else on here) they have not committed to it endlessly. Because of the financial slump though it'll stay in place for some time. Flat taxes are very classically Liberal though, especially when they're set low.

Going to have to wreck my creds. I like Estonia but do not claim any educated layman or better knowledge of their tax laws.
My personal gut feeling is that moderately gradiented income taxes, where higher earners pay a bit higher a percentage of their income, are reasonable. I am quite clear that you should not take away the wish to make shed loads of money by taxing the pips till they squeak (Britain and Sweden in the 70s). But I can understand the logic of the flat tax may be different where your tax system is leaking like a sieve.

To save your time (no, ok, being serious, they claim ethical concerns), Labour have recently decided to switch to "observer status" within Socialist International.

The symbolism is distressing, but the SI has become something it was not supposed to be.
