This is a weird defection. Former Rochdale Labour Councillor John Hartley stood down last year for "a few years rest." Then applied for selection in his former ward of Littleborough Lakeside for both Labour and Conservative, and decided to stand for the Conservatives. His ideological reasoning? The Tory leader told him:‘if I was to stand as a Conservative candidate, I didn’t need to play politics, if elected they would allow me to just do the job of representing the ward to the best of my abilities, no need for knocking on hundreds of doors all over the borough, so really for me it’s a no brainer’. Oh, and the Tories kicked out their sitting councillor to achieve this. www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/labour-left-flabbergasted-veteran-councillor-26296917?int_source=nbaDon't you need to be a Labour member to be a candidate? That would imply that he's running as a Conservative while a member of Labour? It’s Rochdale and bordering the extra odd end of Rossendale. Odd is normality there.

this is what happened to Marc Cranfield-Adams in Richmond-upon-Thames. He was originally elected as Conservative, defected to LD, defected back to Conservative and then LD again. He became a joke basically. Was one of those a trade off for becoming mayor? Like Alan Amos.

He actually changed party while he was Mayor. I lose track of which way now. I think from LD to Conservative on that occasion.

As noted on the Edinburgh thread: Cllr Ross Mackenzie, already suspended twice since May, Labour to Independent in the middle of the budget debate... What does that give Labour in Edinburgh now? Can their minority (of all minority) adminstrations survive?

Don't ask! Don't tell! To coin a phrase. In another life and another age. The way we were! I suppose one might add an act of arson in party HQ or defacing the portraits of our dear Queen or the PM? (I refer of course to Victoria and Disraeli) I guess illicit sex with the wife and the daughter got you a plaque in the Con club, simultaneously gets you a statue outside It was a casual throw-away remark not even based in overheard annecdote at that time or since. As for that plaque, I think it best reserved for teeth rather than walls.

Carlton43 - the man who wants us to have plaque on our teeth. Is there any limit to his fiendishness?

Carlton43 - the man who wants us to have plaque on our teeth. Is there any limit to his fiendishness? I am and have been a victim of plaque and that is largely self-induced I believe. In the midst of a course of long, invasive and rather expensive gum, jaw, roof of mouth and teeth deep seated cleaning to preserve my teeth into further old age. I would never wish that on others.

I know. I was pulling your leg (not your teeth).
I think my dentist or hygienist would say that all plaque is the fault of the patient. Dentists get to blame the patient much more than doctors do.

I fully empathise with you. I'm still aching with the short-term pain of one tooth removed for the long-term gain of preserving the other 27. (well, the four next to the duff tooth)

Emergency dentist today, which helped a lot, but will have to decide between more root canal work or tooth extraction. Sweet joy.

Effectively down two adjacent teeth as that wisdom tooth is useless and completely at the wrong angle.

I empathize with you and hope that the decision is fairly easy to make after gaining concise advice from the dentist. Best wishes for good pain control and a fully satisfactory outcome.
