I have been in the print industry most of my working life, so I am biased, but paper is made from trees which are grown as a crop, just like wheat or carrots. EU legislation means that no tree products can come into Europe (and at the moment that includes the UK) which do not conform to FSC and other environmental standards. European paper manufacturers have over recent years invested heavily in renewable energy and ensuring that they return the water they use in a better condition than it was when they extracted it. Some printers, like our company, pay a premium for the paper we use to be carbon offset, as we do for the couriers we use. The BBC are currently running a story about toilet paper and how many trees it uses. People obsessing about paper miss the important issues: in terms of communication the energy costs of server farms, for example, but overall our lifestyle choices, and principally the environmental costs of animal farming.

This is a weird defection. Former Rochdale Labour Councillor John Hartley stood down last year for "a few years rest." Then applied for selection in his former ward of Littleborough Lakeside for both Labour and Conservative, and decided to stand for the Conservatives. His ideological reasoning? The Tory leader told him:‘if I was to stand as a Conservative candidate, I didn’t need to play politics, if elected they would allow me to just do the job of representing the ward to the best of my abilities, no need for knocking on hundreds of doors all over the borough, so really for me it’s a no brainer’. Oh, and the Tories kicked out their sitting councillor to achieve this. www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/labour-left-flabbergasted-veteran-councillor-26296917?int_source=nba
