The Conservatives stuck to other precedents like not running in Bercow's constituency and not opposing his re-election by voice vote at the start of new parliaments. So however much they don't like him I think it may have been smart to just give him the cross-bench peerage and ultimately take him out of the public limelight. It all seems like a self-inflicted wound, especially given how Boris Johnson ignored other concerns about nominating peers and bullying. The party announced it would stand against Bercow in 2019 just before he announced he was standing down. And Bercow's re-election has been a controversy for some years now - back in 2015 there was a good-proposal-with-bad-motivation-and-spectacularly-bad-tactics to make the vote to re-elect a sitting Speaker a secret ballot as per the selection of a new one. It would probably have passed if tabled as the result of a committee report in the normal course of things but instead it became an attempt to slip it through on the last day of the Parliament and provoked uproar. And exactly how is this in any way a wound for the Conservatives? We're much better off without him.

Don't think it is a bad thing for the Conservatives at all, I just can't do with his manner and the less publicity the better as far as I am concerned.

Just been on my betting account to place a bet on the Euros and noticed Bercow is 5th favourite to be the next PM!!?!! [only behind Sunak, Starmer, Gove and Hunt and even ahead of other recently mentioned prospects like Burnham!]

Can't see any problem. Fact is that the Government decided to abandon protocol for petty reasons, so can't expect others not to do the same abandonment.

A Labour MP on Politics Live today said: "He should have been put in the House of Lords. I think there's some dissatisfaction right across the country about that." Seems a rather bold statement in my view. I would imagine 99.9% of people outside of the Westminster Bubble couldn't give a fig whether Bercow is given a peerage or not. Most of the country either has no idea who he is, or thinks he's a pillock.

Most of the country either has no idea who he is, or thinks he's a pillock. It’s the minority which “thinks he’s a pollock” who most definitely do “give a fig” about this. That is why it’s fewer than 80% of the public who couldn’t care, with most of the remaining 20% still feeling incandescent as to how the little squirt behaved as Speaker.
