Bercow's announcement reminds me of an article I read a while ago about celebrities who came out of the closet in 2020. One of them was, bizarrely, Barry Manilow, who I'm pretty sure came out during the Stone Age.

My grandmother believed Liberace to be straight. Which is an interesting perspective.

Joanna was the cabinet member for transport in the Lib Dem administration. Lambridge was the ward we had our one councillor in up to 2019, so excellent to see us returning there.

My grandmother believed Liberace to be straight. Which is an interesting perspective. Well he did win a high profile libel case on the subject. In which he claimed, on oath, never to have indulged in "homosexual practices" in his entire life.

Two I think, one here and one in the States where a magazine said his theme song should be Mad About the Boy

A couple of interesting points in the article. He is now a Green but will "continue .. as an Independent" until May 2022. So he is sort of a Schroedinger's councillor it seems, simultaneously Green and Independent. Also interesting - if understandable - that the main issue mentioned was fighting the down-grading of an airport, presumably to keep the number of flights at their current level rather than reducing them.

With regard to the first point, it is party policy that elected defectors sit as independents until officially elected as Green, so the same thing has previously happened with John Finnie MSP, who was officially an independent until elected as Green in 2016 and further back with Cllr Martin Ford in Aberdeenshire and is also currently the case with one of the two councillors mentioned in Orkney.

Am surprised at Abi Brown, the Conservative leader, announcing this before Penkhull & Stoke as she was very much on the defensive publicly last year when the four defectors refused to trigger by-elections (I’m not arguing that they should, but there did seem a significant backlash in The Sentinel, on Radio Stoke, and, of course, social media); I’m sure it’s not coincidental that in that time I’ve had three leaflets, as one of his electorate, from Shaun Bennett attempting to justify his decision not to resign, the last one less than a month ago, which suggests he’s still getting negative feedback.

What does Independent mean? Is he likely to identify with the TUV strand of Unionism, or is he more in the UUP mould? Is he likely to shift either way?

Dunno but I don't think there's much electoral room in North Down for a DUP hardliner.
