VoxPopuli - an infrequent pollster - puts Bolsonaro and the PT-candidate 50:50 (n=2000), the others have a clear lead for the man of the "SocialLiberal"-party.

If Haddad pulls it off, it will be a very impressive comeback. Amusingly he has received the endorsement of prosecutor Barbosa, the man who put his colleagues in prison!

Surely a very significant endorsement, given that TP's rampant corruption is the biggest strike against voting for Haddad? I wonder whether many voters will notice or care, though.

Perhaps the lesson is that if you force voters to choose between only socialism or barbarism, barbarism wins...so don't force that choice!

"Owen Jones 🌹 Retweeted Europe Elects Socialism or barbarism: that's the choice now facing humanity. The world's fourth biggest democracy has been consumed by fascism and, if we don't fight back, what's happened to Brazil will happen to us all." Does he realise, do you think, that Brazil has had a military dictatorship within living memory?

Related: check out Bolsonaro's running mate. If anything an even bigger cause for concern than the man himself...

Also in the governor-RunOffs the less left candidates won everywhere (except RN [PT over PDT] and perhaps MG [NOVO over PSDB] or PA [MDB over DEM]).

I suspect a lot more people would be upset at the fascist victory in Brazil, if people like Owen hasn't already spent 5 years hysterically shrieking about fascist victories in America, Italy, Austria, Poland, , Hungary, etc. He's the boy who cried wolf.

Significant, but difficult when claiming that locking up PT members was some kind of plot.

He has suddenly developed an interest in the prospect of a repressive regime in South America. Curiously, he's said very little on such regimes in the recent times. Also, why is he quoting an anarchist when he is not? The Pillock of Stockport strikes again.

Does he realise, do you think, that Brazil has had a military dictatorship within living memory? He's not stupid, he must know the history of the country. What leads you to that hasty conclusion when there is so much evidence to the contrary?

Compulsory voting, and the choice limited to two candidates both unpalatable in their way, what do you expect?

Compulsory voting, and the choice limited to two candidates both unpalatable in their way, what do you expect? Liberals didn't have anyone to vote for. I'm surprised more didn't abstain. Three further thoughts: The fine for not voting was enough to be a serious consideration among Brazil's poor, and that is the great majority of the country after all. I know it was for some of my contacts, most of whom were devastated they couldn't vote for Lula anyway.. The total number of blank and spoiled papers was enough to give Haddad a majority of about a million had they all voted for him. That of course was never going to happen. I'm not sure liberals really had anyone to vote for in the first round, let alone the run-off

I'm surprised more didn't abstain. given that people walked into polling stations in 2002 with pegs on their noses to vote for a corrupt politician like Chirac to keep Le Pen out I'm amazed people would abstain on a vote that included a man who said Pinochet didnt kill enough people. I am reminded of this article: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/29/french-election-voting-abstainers-macron-le-pen
