Tories must be disappointed by the lack of any bounce from Cameron's speech.

Well I was right to say the PM's speech probably wouldn't be a turning point - that is still to come. It does strenghten Tory chances in the Euro elections next year.

So much for Smithson's expert prediction on how to know yougov polls before you go to bed... if the Tories are doing bad the Sun is supposed to not post before bedtime...

Well I was right to say the PM's speech probably wouldn't be a turning point - that is still to come. I still think he has made himself a hostage to fortune. In the narrow political sense Im always happy to see the Tories are talking again about Europe. In the wider sense I'm worried that the Tories seem obsessed again about europe.

Is Cameron getting a bit of 'Blairitis' ? First we had Europe and then the North Africa visit pretending to save the world there and yet little can change there. Is this legacy building anticipating not being a PM after 2015 ?

I tend to think that leaders start going international touring when they get bored and think that their government is getting stale so they will be a second term Presidential Statesman etc. In UK slightly when they find that departments are hard to run from Number 10. I suspect Cameron may have reached that.

In that case he is finished, because domestic policy as we know is king and it does leave a vacuum as well for people to make mischeif

Mrs Thatcher's visit to the USSR in early 1987 helped a great deal towards the Conservatives' re-election that year.
