And that might not have been wise in itself Iain! Common Abuse, guv and in common usage for decades by Private Eye. Yes. Of course. But it was the example set to others within the context! One never knows what may come out of a vigorous ruck.

Has anyone noticed that both India and Pakistan seem to pluralise "general election" to "general elections" when talking of a single general election? This minor detail does baffle me. I half read that as Pakistan has a generals election.

Jinnah's hypocritical treatment of his daughter was rather unpleasant.
Knew his malts, though.

Jinnah's hypocritical treatment of his daughter was rather unpleasant. Knew his malts, though. Jinnah's treatment of his daughter is much exaggerated, and certainly by the time he died they had been reconciled. The issue which led to their strained relationship was her marriage to a non-Muslim, but even then he never disowned her. Jinnah himself married a non-Muslim. His second wife was a Parsi who converted after marrying, in the face of ostracism from her family.

Pakistan was never workable - it was an intellectual project that became irreversible political reality before any of its inherent contradictions were even discussed, let alone resolved - but only became ungovernable during the Zia decade.

From the 1982 film Gandhi (Jinnah is portrayed by the one smoking near the start):

I hadn't noticed that. The usage suggests that they conceptualise their general elections as being a series of discrete elections which happen on the same day, rather than being a single election which has local candidates (which is the way the overwhelming majority of Brits think of them). Alternatively, it could be a by-product of grammatical conventions that are common in Indian languages filtering into their usage of English.

Interesting poll result above at the time of posting - only the PPP have attracted votes (from an assortment of Labour, Greens, Lib Dems and one Conservative forum member). I suppose it is particularly difficult for this forum to imagine themselves as citizens of a country in which religion plays an integral part in most aspects of life - the largest party in the parliament is the Pakistan Muslim League.

Made for my own reference, but why not share it? Some recent electoral patterns in Karachi:

Yes I expect many of us here would have wanted a none of the above button, and at best went for PPP as the least worst option

Polls will close at six local time (that's two here) and we should have a good picture of the results by around about eleven (seven here). Results will then be finalised the day after. It is really not at all clear what's going to happen.

If you look at the post at 12:12, it appears to suggest that they are different polling stations for different genders...

Looks like middle class snobbery in relation to the plebs voting in elections isn’t just confined to the West.

They're often pretty sketchy and there's not much detail from some, but various exit polls suggest a PTI lead.

One of the Sky channels is showing it, I have not a clue as to what is going on but the numbers being flashed up suggest a disaster for the PPP and the PTI and Fianna Nawaz not being far off each other.
