Imran Khan would be terrible for Pakistan and sadly he’s going to win. He’s gone from cricketing playboy to an authoritarian sounding anti Western demagogue. On top of that he’s in all probability a puppet of the military and the ISI. I am not hopeful for Pakistan’s future.

Their last best chance was probably Benazir Bhutto says it all I was in Pakistan when she won last time (I think) staying in a small hotel quite a long way up the Karakorum Highway. The locals were delighted and toured the village offering all and sundry a tot of their illicit home-made hooch.

I wrote a little guide to the parties contesting the election, in which I compare Nawaz Sharif to James Buchanan and muse about the power of Karachi mafia boss who lives in Mill Hill. Hope it's useful.

Said he's a real arsehole.

I know someone who met him a long time ago and, yes, that's about right.

Yes: they were competitive in Punjab in 2002 (which they would likely have won had they been entirely free and fair), 2008 and the elections of the late 80s/early 90s, but not in 1997 or 2013. In most of those elections they also did well in the old NWFP (now KP) and Baluchistan. Outside the rural parts of Sindh their support is really volatile.

Has anyone noticed that both India and Pakistan seem to pluralise "general election" to "general elections" when talking of a single general election? This minor detail does baffle me.

It is arguable that Pakistan was cursed from the beginning - I certainly doubt if Jinnah dying as soon as he did was part of the plan.

Poll added on the third attempt - slip of the hand first time, then loss of internet connection on the second. And I thought the angry bear was bad...
Edit: I'm not expecting a high turnout.
