Leo Varadkar not reelected on the first ballot. Unprecedented for a Taoiseach.

It definitely seems like SF have under nominated, and that will cost them quite a few potential seats.
That seems to be one of the worst aspects of STV - how many candidates you nominate seems almost as important as how many votes you get!

Given that the case for PR is no need for tactical voting, I think its a dreadful system

Mislabelling parties as crypto fascist doesn't justify mislabelling SF as anymore fascist This is true. Apologists for murder is a more accurate label. Or the party in coalition, running Northern Ireland.

That seems to be one of the worst aspects of STV - how many candidates you nominate seems almost as important as how many votes you get! The other important element is very disciplined management of your first preferences. Overloading a popular candidate can squeeze out other prospects further down your list.

That seems to be one of the worst aspects of STV - how many candidates you nominate seems almost as important as how many votes you get! That seems to be particular to Ireland though. The Australian states & territories that use it without group voting tickets don't have a problem with nominating for every vacancy and in Malta you can get more candidates from a party than slots to fill without any problems. Perhaps it's ballot paper layout, perhaps it's a strong emphasis on the individual & locality, perhaps it's some other reason but STV doesn't necessarily lead to this. (By the way STV advocates often go on and on (and on...) about it supposedly leading to greater choice on policies within parties. Can someone produce evidence of a constituency where the candidates from a single party bent over backwards to make clear where they stood on issues that divide their party?)

Galway East has the first count in:
Seán Canney, IND 7,815 Louis O'Hara, SF 7,108 Ciaran Cannon, FG 6,298 Pete Roche, FG 6,034 Anne Rabbitte, FF 5,762 Donagh Mark Killilea, FF 4,932 Eoin Madden, GP 1,924 Peter Reid, SD 848 Marian Spelman, LAB 845 Martin 'Jonesy' Ward, AON 582 David O'Reilly, IND 246 Deaglán Maccanna, RN 126
Could be no change overall - we'll now see if Sinn Féin have overcome their transfer repellence.

Micheal Lehane from RTE reckons the independents (including several big names) are going to be badly squeezed across the board.

If you search RTÉ Player you should (or at least I did on my iPhone get an English and Gaelic option. I’ve downloaded the free App because it kept freezing on the browser, but I think that’s noes to do with Storm Ciara hitting with a vengeance and affecting the broadband.
