Agents have been told June 14 will be polling day Has the by-election formally been set for 14 June? This would give prospective candidates only a week from now to get their nomination papers in if this was true!

Some quite incredible ramping in this thread... Tory gain on the back of our stupendous London performance

2006 local elections: Lewisham East, using highest vote method. LD 6,432 (29.5%) Lab 6,357 (29.2%) Con 5,072 (23.3%) Greens 2,637 (12.1%) Ind 1,020 (4.7%) UKIP 281 (1.3%) By comparison, the 1982 results for Lewisham East locally using highest vote method:
Labour 10,017 (37.5%) Conservative 9,904 (37.0%) Liberal/SDP Alliance 6,438 (24.1%) Communist 278 (1.0%) Other 108 (0.4%).
Lewisham East has like many former inner London marginal seats been substantially affected by demographic change and an increased concentration of liberal-minded degree-educated voters who are also not as likely to be (outright) owner-occupiers.

On the face of it the fact Labour got most votes in 1982 is an argument against the seat having changed that much over the years. Of course that's deceptive because back then it was mainly white working-class people supporting Labour whereas now it's mostly a combination of EMs and middle-class white people.

Has there ever been a by-election in Lewisham?

We were spared/robbed of (depending on taste) a by-election in Lewisham Deptford in 1987. John Silkin died at the end of April that year but then Mrs Thatcher called a general election for June. It could have been interesting given it sat between Bermondsey and Greenwich, both scenes of spectacular Alliance by-election gains, the latter only a few months earlier

There was a Lewisham North by-election in 1957 which was a Labour gain from the Conservatives. Niall McDermot lost the seat in 1959 but re-entered the Commons by holding Derby North in another by-election in 1962. It looks as if his by-election win was facilitated by the candidacy of an Independent Loyalist whose vote was higher than the Labour majority. Some discussion of which here.

It's the same every by-election. The NEC select the shortlist and have done so for years. Then the CLP selects from that list So there's nothing happening here that doesn't happen in every other by-election

As certain as day follows night, a faction will accuse the other lot of doing something they themselves would do if the shoe was on the other foot. It's the Labour way.

When that sort of thing happens, there is usually a reason. Past baggage?

It's interesting how by-elections are almost always held either as quickly as possible, or the opposite of as quickly as possible.
