I understand there is to be a by-election in Besses in Bury due to the resignation of Labour councillor, Elizabeth Fitzgerald (last elected in 2016). I gather the election will be on 19th July.
There was a by-election in Besses just last year which was comfortably held by Labour. It is a very safe Labour ward, made up of the eastern end of Whitefield and parts of Unsworth. Labour strength comes from two large Manchester overspill council estates. The rest of the ward is mostly modest semis and bungalows, though it also contains much of Whitefield town centre with some tightly packed terraces. Despite being in Whitefield and north of the M60, it has a very inner Manchester feel to it. Unlike the other Whitefield ward, Pilkington Park, there is not much of a Jewish community in Besses.
It will be another comfortable Labour hold.

After publication of the notice of vacancy, two electors in the area of the authority must write in to request an election. If they do then the byelection must be called within 35 days. |

It's stuff like this which really shows the need for standarisation and organisation, but also how important it is to have people who work for councils who know about how the Interet actually works. It's more necessary than ever to have designers who know that the current Internet experience is app-lead and single-click led. Open app, click button, get results. In the Internet of my early 20s, the first experience I had on-line, the never ending trees as described above were all over the place. It had its source in the way computer programming worked so made sense. These days it's ancient history to expect people to click, click, click, click, click, click, download. |

Just heard that Cllr Alan Webb (Bletchley East) has resigned from Milton Keynes Council, with a by-election expected on July 19th. Shame, I thought he was a decent councillor. Don't know why yet.
Should be a safe Labour seat but UKIP came 3rd in the 2014 all-outs (so had a cllr who didn't defend in 2015 when Labour won it back) and the Tories may think this is the sort of area that Brexit helps them in.

As reported on the Peterborough thread, June Bull has resigned as Conservative councillor for Orton Longueville ward, Peterborough council. An update on this one. Anne Court is standing for re-election in this by-election. It appears she had an operation, there were serious complications arising from it and she fell foul of the six-month rule. I'm not sure whether she was disqualified or resigned first. |

By-Elections are like buses in Bury. A second Labour Councillor has resigned, former Council Leader Mike Connolly has resigned due to ill health.
No date confirmed yet for when the East ward by-election will be held.
