Four Aldermanic elections are coming up in the City of London in July. Peter Hewitt is seeking re-election as Alderman for Aldgate ward, and Sir Alan Yarrow is seeking re-election for Bridge and Bridge Without ward. Looks like an unopposed return in Bridge and Bridge Without - only Sir Alan is nominated. He has until Friday to decide whether to withdraw. There still has to be a wardmote even if he's going to be elected unopposed though. |

Sir Alan Yarrow lives in West Hill Road, East Putney Ward, Wandsworth and was really quite rude when I (on a rare day canvassing my own ward) knocked on his door (not knowing who he was). I marked him down as an “A” and carried on. The ward chair who knows him personally assured me he simply must be onside and simply be unwilling to reveal his allegiance publicly. In my view either he’s the ultimate champagne socialist (ok the vintage champagne salesman in battersea would take some beating) or has such a high opinion of his fairly pointless political role that he thinks it’s ok to be rude to a young Tory canvasser (I didn’t even press for a VI). Either way, I’m not a fan. |

Labour have selected Jemima Laing as their candidate for Stoke on July 26. She stood unsuccessfully in Moor View ward in the May elections, and lives in Stoke ward. |

East Devon District, Ottery St Mary Rural ward: Matt Coppell (East Devon Alliance) disqualified through non-attendance. Sounds like it was accidental - he was still active in the community but less interested in the meetings or found they clashed with his work. The community stuff is all very good for a councillor to be involved in, but most of it can be done without being a councillor. So a lame excuse in my opinion.

The West Lancashire, Knowsley vacancy is new and somewhat mysterious - caused by the resignation on 18 June of Michelle Aldridge, who was elected for the first time only on 3 May. It's the ward which would normally be called Ormskirk South West.

The Tories have stood a candidate on the Gurnos is the most surprising part about this. I don't think they've stood there for a very long time (as in before 1975). They barely manage to stand any candidates in Merthyr at the best of times. That they turn out to have problems is hardly surprising. |
