At the May elections in 2014 and 2010, the same stage of the local council electoral cycle as now, there were 70 by-elections in 2014 (30 single and 40 multi) and 83 in 2010 (38 single and 45 multi). At the present time there are 40 known vacancies with the potential for the by-election to be held on the 3 May.
Part of the reason for the current lower number in 2018 may be that there are likely to be 77 by-elections in the January to April period compared to 46 in 2014 and 41 in 2010.
The current known vacancies which may be held on 3 May are: - * indicates "double" election and ^ arising from the death of the previous councillor

Crawley, Ifield: the late councillor is John Stanley whose term would have ended this year, so he will be replaced in the ordinary election rather than in a by-election.

I wonder if there will be an Independent Diddyman candidate in Knotty Ash to mark the passing of Ken Dodd?

Isn't Ellesmere Port Town in Ellesmere Port & Neston local authority rather than Cheshire West & Chester?

Isn't Ellesmere Port Town in Ellesmere Port & Neston local authority rather than Cheshire West & Chester? Since that authority was abolished in 2009 and merged into Cheshire West & Chester, obviously not..

This infographic for Greyfriars ward appears on Preston City Council's website. I offer no comment about whether it's any good.

That very argument was Gwyneth Dunwoody’s last speech and vote in the Commons, defying the Whip to vote against the creation of Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester councils.

There should have been four unitaries (or perhaps three with expanded Warrington and Halton). But that's just me.

Double vacancies previously flagged are confirmed in Cheltenham, Leckhampton NE Lincs, Immingham Rochford, Hockley Runnymede, Chertsey South and Row Town Runnymede, Foxhills Welwyn Hatfield, Hatfield Villages
There are two further double vacancies in Welwyn Hatfield, for Northaw and Cuffley, and Welham Green and Hatfield South wards.
The Burnley, Queensgate vacancy will not be a double vacancy on 3rd May. I am still trying to confirm what is happening with the vacancies in Wolverhampton.

The Burnley, Queensgate vacancy will not be a double vacancy on 3rd May The councillor has reappeared on the list of councillors. He was previously removed with a note saying he was no longer on the council. His page is here, stating his term of office as 07/05/2015 - 21/02/2018. burnley.moderngov.co.uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=143
