One of the best things that could happen to Matheson in the eyes of the GOP would probably be for him to run as governor. Even if he wins, all his vetoes can be overriden by the state legislature where the GOP have supermajorities. And that means his congressional seat is vacant and ready to be picked up by a fresh GOP candidate.

Surely no Utah democratic would seriously contemplate dumping Matheson however you drew his district. I assume that Jim Matheson is a Mormon.

Surely no Utah democratic would seriously contemplate dumping Matheson however you drew his district. I seem to remember he underperformed at the convention this year, or at least that polling suggested he would. Given the conservatism of his voting record, I'd suggest he'd probably perfom poorly in Salt Lake City. But I would expect him to have a floor in the high fifties in any primary, no matter the district.

Is Utah one of the states that bans atheists from taking public office?

Are non-Mormons allowed on the ballot in Utah I met someone at an International Conference who was on the Faculty at Brigham Young University, Provo. Amazingly he was not a Mormon. I queried this with another US academic and he confirmed that Brigham Young University did indeed employ non Mormons "but maybe they will not get promoted"!

The current Mayor of Salt Lake City is not a Mormon. Salt Lake City is tiny compared to it's metropolitan area, it has barely 1/10th of the population of the official Salt Lake City Metro area and less than 1/18th of the population of the greater conurbation. This isn't uncommon in the intermountain west. SLC proper is liberal and Democratic, the rest of Utah isn't. SLC is actually quite nice and worth a visit, the rest of Stepford Utah is worth seeing for the views.

Is Utah one of the states that bans atheists from taking public office? There are unconstitutional bans on atheists taking public office in Maryland, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Torcaso v. Watkins is the case that challenged the Maryland provision, they just haven't got around to removing it yet after fifty years.

Given the discussion on another thread 50 years to resolve a political issue is now officially precipitate or a headlong rush.

Two endangered incumbents survived difficult primaries yesterday - Sen Orrin Hatch (R-UT) beat a tea party backed challenger and is now likely to be President Pro Tem of the Senate should the Republicans win a majority.
Rep Charlie Rangel (D-NY) managed to keep ahead of his challenger despite some very difficult problems over ethics.
But Rep John Sullivan (R-OK) did lose his primary to tea party candidate Jim Bridenstine.

I suspect it won't happen this time. He's a certain retirement for 2014 though, and I can't see the black community rallying behind a single candidate to stop Espaillat.
